My Flu and Me

By Joan McDaniel                    February 27, 2020

This is a re-write of my article The Flu and Me

This is my personal story of my getting the flu back in 2018 and what I did to get well.  The story is worth telling by what I learned during the experience.  As the article points out, I was very sick back in 2012.  I had made the decision to get well, I couldn’t find anything in the medical world that could help me so I charted a course to learn how to heal myself. I made up my mind to regain my health and to regain control of my own body. To get well I had to do it naturally everything else is just window dressing.

I had regain enough of my health back to return to work and live a standard normal day to day life, but I woke up one morning in 2018 with a fever and the flu.  I didn’t feel very well at all. My immune system had come a long way but it would need help to get me over this.  The flu set me back and this is how I worked it out. There were times when I thought I’d have to give up but I was persistent and am now quite well.

I Had to Regain Control

This is my story, and it reflects my personal opinions.

I essentially got sick from my actions, ignoring the Cause and Effect of not eating and living healthy and eating junk that tasted good on the tongue and was destroying the brain and body.

I though I was strong enough to do just about anything.  You can when your young but everything has a price.

Essentially in January 2012 I didn’t have an immune system left. My marvelous organized immune system was gone it had been overrun with toxins, trash and sludge during my years of abuse.  My lifestyle had become a bad habit I had to break or it would break me. Essentially, I had to learn how to walk all over again.

I Got Sick While Under Medical Care

I had Heath Insurance, medical care and visited a doctor regularly.  But as the years went by I just seemed to be getting sicker and sicker.

Doctors gave me medication to help with the increasing illnesses, like hypertension, hypothyroid and others like the flu and common cold.  But no one was telling me to re-build my immune system.  Someone may recommend increasing vitamin C and maybe D but no mention or concern about my Immune System.

What Do You Know?

Doctor’s act like either you’re complaining to much,or that you don’t know what is best, or that the latest medication will fix it for you.  In the  case of a cold, the doctor ignores your complaint if a medical test doesn’t show anything.  It doesn’t matter how often you cough. You don’t have a serious cold until the Xray says you have a serious cold.

No one tells you to take charge and start eating and living healthy.

What  Is A Immune System?

The Immune System is a very complex and well working engine.  The power of the immune system is undervalued in the current pill-pushing medical world. In fact I the immune system is simply ignored.  Even while being ignored and forgotten, it works 24-7 to keep you healthy.  The immune system is a wall of protection your body uses against illness.

One thing for sure is your immune system doesn’t help your doctor pay for his children’s education, or does it help the other fat cats in the medical profession – Your Immune System products you from illness not anyone else.

It is part of the human body’s function to keep your beautiful body (a clean machine) and its functions fit, strong and healthy. Think of you body like you do your new car.

What Happens If You Ignore Your Immune System?

As you go through life, you start to age and enjoy life with carless regard, forgetting to keep you body strong, the immune system pays the price.  The longer you ignore it the weaker it gets. Lack of inner harmony, anxiety, hate, and contradictions is like asking your car to run on fumes (sludge and ash) rather than clean oil and gas.  Your car, like your body will slow and then stop running altogether.  Your body like your car needs the filters changed, new fresh oil change every 3,000 miles and clean gas. Your car is easy to maintain, Your body takes a little more attention.  You can buy a new car, But its hard to find new bodies. This is just some of the things that harm your immune system one being eating processed foods like table sugar, and table salt.

You Have To Take Responsibility

It is your responsibility to keep you body clean and strong like the well oiled machine it was meant to be.

This is not a discussion of the how the immune system works, but as an introduction is to explain why I was so sick with the flu.

22 Foods That Boost Your Immune System

The above links have some useful information. I took the task of getting well very serious.  I stopped drinking alcohol, smoking and wearing and eating plastic.  I learned to slow down, look all around me and treat my body with kindness, love and respect it deserves.

I discovered the only thing the modern medical world offer me was more harsh chemicals and more antibiotics.  Previously before I got really sick I had so many colds, I was making myself sick, I was taking antibiotics, pills, and was addicted to Robitussin. It like almost every year I had another cold. My Winter Cold

Now the reprint of my old article

The Flu and Me

By Joan L. McDaniel                                    October 10.2018

One Day I woke Up with the Flu

For the past 6 years I have taken the responsibility of my own  health. I have spent that time with the following inspiration;

“Hippocrates is considered to be the founder of medicine as a “rational science.” said the famous quote, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. I have successfully regained my health without medication. I have been using good old American Common Sense and Homeopathic tradition teachings.  I have been using the Scientific Method evidence based system of proof.  The proof is when I consider the condition I was trying to eliminate gone. I’m the proof.

Also a quote from Voltaire; “no dyspeptic can have a sane outlook on life; and a man/woman whose bodily functions are impaired has a lowered moral resistance. To keep the body fit is a help in keeping the mind pure, you must take charge and keep a clean body.  Careless habits of eating are responsible for much metal disability.”  This extract is from a 1913 speech to Yale by Sir William Osler entitled “A Way of Life”

I have spent hours researching the Internet and other modern alternate medicine doctors writings.

I Got Well Enough to Return to Work

My body and I have been on quite a journey.  I have also seen the body’s defense system at work and its powerful healing energy.

It was early in the spring of 2016 about 2am, I woke up with chills and a fever.  I was a little worried.  A few days before, I had a sore throat which turned into laryngitis.  I felt fine and went to work.  Unfortunately my replacement called in and I had to work a double.  By time I got off I grabbed a bite and fell into bed.  Only to wake up with fever of 102.2 and a very dry cough and speaking in a whisper.  I was coughing so much it began to hurt.

I was a Little Worried

I knew if nothing else, I could always contact a doctor and get on a regiment of antibiotics but I wanted to try my own remedies first.  I had come a long way, making myself well I would try again.  I knew I had to mix and match different herbs and treatments and began a plan of action.

I broke the fever by taking the original form of Aspirin (Willow Bark). First Wonder Drug Came From a Tree. I referenced my herbal books,  wrote down a list of herbs. I had some of them on hand and had to go get the others, I could speak a little better, had a little more energy, and was hungry.  Better but I still had the cough.  A dry hacking cough which made everything else hurt.

My First Solution was Water

I went to my local Irish Pub but was afraid to stay because all I could do is cough that includes doing much talking.  I ordered something to go and the waitress gave me a glass of ice water to sip on. As I sat there I noticed the more water I drank the less I coughed. I felt so good I ate the meal there.

I left the restaurant with a glass of ice in a paper cup, went to the health food store to get the herbs then back home and bed.

I was hopping to find a better solution than water.  It was working but I had to get back to work in a few days and I didn’t feel very well.

Next came the Mucus

I had been diagnosed with my original illness in 2012 with COPD so my breathing was compromised with the years of smoking.  What mucus I could cough up was as thick as cement.  It looked like the image on the top.

What is COPD?

“According to modern medicine Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. This disease is characterized by increasing breathlessness.

COPD is a progressive and (currently) incurable disease, but with the right diagnosis and treatment, there are many things you can do to manage your COPD and breathe better. People can live for many years with COPD and enjoy life.”

Did I Finally Meet My Match?

This flu/cold (or whatever) was bad.  I was worried that I had finally found my match and would have to resort to calling the doctor with my tail between my legs and demand an antibiotic. I as a nurse, had been lead to believe over the past 35 years to expect instant magic.  Only one problem, I didn’t have a doctor anymore, and ER would gladly bill me big money for one, and all the Flu, cold and COPD Big Parma used as standard medicines.  I had to keep searching.

Homeopathic,  or Home Remedies for the Cold or Flu

We all have or have heard of remedies for the common cold and this isn’t to add to that.  This article is about how I found to thin mucus to help cough out the toxins and return to health.

What is Mucus?

It finally dawned on me, my problem was thick gooey mucus that had grown to be as hard as rocks.

Increased mucus production is the body’s way of flushing out irritants, and toxins out of the body.  The mucus doesn’t necessary increase. Instead it becomes thicker, more annoying, and more adhesive.  The purpose is to attract the toxin, attach it to the thickened mucus and make it annoying so you will cough and sneeze to expel it out.

You need mucus, it lines and protects the body’s cavities opened to the outside and prevents irritation to the cavity. It serves as a filter for air on inhalation.

You normally don’t even know you have mucus until you have caught a cold.  Depending on how bad the cold is, you not only know about mucus it will become a major problem dealing with it. Like how to not have to wear pull-ups. It is tough being old.

Spit is produced by the saliva glands in the throat at the first approach to food.  It is the first step in digestion.  Mucus is thicker and slim.  When you spit saliva, it does not contain mucus.  Mucus is thicker, heavier and cannot be coughed up in its clear state.

Where is Mucus

You have mucus from inside your head to your anus.  Mucus in your head, lungs, mouth, nose, sinuses, throat, intestines, and inside most organs. Mucus helps humidity the air we breathe and to prevent irritation to the cavity. It serves as a filter for air on inhalation, and to keep things moving in the tubes.  You need mucus.

This Article isn’t A How To Or About  A Cure

Remember this article is my story, I am not suggesting anything. This article isn’t a how to: How to cure any illness, or  How to use herbal medicine vs Modern medicine.  It is a story of what I learned finding out how to thin mucus to help my body recover from inflammation by using Coughing, sneezing and other methods of expelling the toxin from the body. I don’t recommend any one or any thing except maybe a neti-pot. This article isn’t about how to cure anything.

My head wasn’t very clear yet and my thinking a little foggy.  I knew the importance of water and mucus.  Without water you are considered dehydrated and the mucus will be hard and dry.  The human body needs water especially a head full of mucus in the form of rocks.  I increased my water intake and I felt cooled, my throat felt better, and the cough became more productive. But this wasn’t enough, the water was helping but I needed to do something more and I did not want to return to immune system destructive antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all bacteria both the good and the bad.

My Body isn’t Very Good At Coughing Up Rocks

What I needed, was a better way to help thin the mucus and I hadn’t found it yet.

By the way the common cold is a virus and antibiotics do not do anything against a virus. Anti fungal natural remedies can work better.  See My definitions.

Then I found the Neti-Pot

Driven with the deep concern to learn the truth I couldn’t think of anything else. Eat, work, I think I drove everyone around me crazy.  Thanking  God and the angels sent around me for the availability of an uncensored Internet, I kept researching and reading.  I was driven with a madness. I turned over any stone I found in my way.

I then found the neti-pot.  I  could use warm water in the nose. This little Aladdin’s lamp even helped my COPD.

I am including pictures showing the body’s mucus cavities.  I needed it to understand what I was feeling and why.  I have always been able to understand better with pictures.  I approach the problem by looking for suggestions and applying ideas and see what works.  I would know it works because I was the object and could feel the improvement or set back or whatever.

I used the Hunt and Peck and flying by the seat of my pants as the old saying goes.

Mucus Membrans

To manage an illness you need to better understand how your body works and what you can do to help it.

These following pictures show what we call body cavities that are lined with Mucus Membranes

Note the Colon is lined with mucus but is not shown

Mucus membranes

Frontal picture

Your body tries to rid itself of the toxins by changing the character of the mucus. It thickens and becomes very irritating.  This results in it becoming very itchy and the skin around it very red.  It may even start to break out.  It wants you to feel it and maybe you’ll do something to help.

According to WebMd, It generally takes a bad cold, or contact with something irritating — like a plate of nuclear-hot Buffalo wings — to throw your body’s mucus production into overdrive.

For instance, during an allergic response to an offending trigger, such as pollen or ragweed, mast cells in your body squeeze out a substance called  histamine, which triggers sneezing, itching, and nasal stuffiness. The tissue of the mucus membranes starts leaking fluid, and your nose begins to run. Note the body will stop producing these things when the toxin and mucus plug is gone.

What Color is Mucus?

Mucus can be clear, brown, green, Pink, Red-Colored or White.  Coughing up yellow or green mucus usually means inflammation or infection that has been isolated.  Mucus collects foreign material and when there is an infection, mucus changes color to yellow or even green as a result of trapped bacteria, fungus or other toxin. This is a result of WBC and the Immune Systems function.  This will create what is called congestion.  Mucus thickens sending a signal to the body to cough and expel out the toxin.  Mucus can also be White which indicates a dry cough without an infection.  Any color like Pink, Pink Red or Brown indicates the coughing is hard and has cause a slight drama.  Try to drink more water.

Garlic, Water, Licorice Root, Marshmallow Root, Mullen leaf, Slippery Elm,  other de-mucus herbs and a Neti-Pot I used to thin my mucus and get well

I used the above and doubled up on the Garlic and Vitamin C.  Taking Garlic raw as my article Garlic Ancient and Powerful said.  I used the most of the herbs taken as a tea. The Teas were effective, I also took them in capsule form.

I did use guaifenesin an over the counter medicine only to feel the toxins like red dye and fructose corn syrup.  I would have to make my own. I found Wild Cherry Syrup. In about a week, my mucus was almost back to thin and clear.

The Neti-Pot Became Extremely Helpful

It took a little while to get the hang of it but I got it. I was driven with the deep concern to learn the truth I couldn’t think of anything else. Eat, work, I think I drove everyone around me nuts.  I could see it in their faces “There she goes again” I Thank the Gods around me for the Internet, I kept researching and reading. The Internet never said “No” or I’m busy or “You Again?” I was driven with a madness of turning over any  stone I found in my way.

Neti Pot Has Been Used Since the Ancient Times

Is an alternative of saline mouth, throat and nasal irrigation to remove mucus with nasal irrigation. The mucus is holding toxins and irritants causing inflammation as part of the immune system.  The mucus acts like glue and toxins adhere to it rather than circulate freely in the Blood causes more serious illness.

The concept of getting rid of irritants by thinning mucus originated with our ancestors.  The Ayurvedic natural medical tradition used a “jala net” which is now called a Neti Pot is used

to gently flush away irritants that cause these symptoms and infections. Note one method of Ayurvedic is “Be Gentle”.  Neti-Pot is very effective and non-dependent on modern Big Rx and Big Pharma with its antibiotics, antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, or surgical interventions which rarely work and do little to treat the underlying cause or even attempt to attempt a cure. Using the Neti pot to pour the mixture into one nostril then the other to cleanse the nasal passages. This procedure will also help the common cold.

What type of salt?

I found Himalayan Salt to be very useful during my recovery of 6 years ago. Himalayan sea salt contains 84 minerals but it doesn’t contain Iodine which is recommended for use in gargling and the Neti-Pot.

Himalayan salt is mined from the Khewra Salt Mines in Pakistan, situated at the foothills of the Himalayas. It is the second-largest salt mine in the world, and official records of the Khewra mine date back to the 13th century. The salt obtained from Khewra includes transparent, white, pink, red and dark red salts. Today the mine includes nearly 25 miles of tunnels stretched across 11 levels, and runs almost a half mile into the mountains.

Modern Medicines approach to the Common Cold. How Can I Get Rid of Mucus?

Modern Medicine treats seasonal allergies, hay fever, chronic sinusitis, nasal inflammation, coughs, colds, and other nasal or sinus inflammation.  In fact, there is a famous quote saying,  “there isn’t a cure for the common cold.”

According to Web-MD, ”People with chronic sinus problems who are constantly blowing their noses understandably want the goo gone. Modern medicine treats it as an allergy with antihistamines, and bacterial infections with antibiotics.  They rarely use antifungal.  Steroids, allergy shots are also used.

Some Natural Remedies for Coughs and Thinning Mucus

I did a great deal of research and compiled a list of Natural Remedies available many of which I successfully used.  In the future, when you’re feeling better you need to look into strengthening you immune system: Eliminate or limit sugars and processed foods from your diet.  There are many natropathic or homeopathic nutritional diets one is Dr. Mercola’s nutrition plan and his book Take Control of Your Health.

Methods I used:

Gargle, Herbs in Capsules, Neti pot cleansing, Steaming, drinking certain herbal Teas, herbal teas, herbal oils to clear up the mucus overload.

But first I included a section of definitions for further clarity.

Terms used==================

Antihistamines block or limit the action of histamines, those substances triggered by allergic reactions that cause the tissue in the nose to swell up and release more, thinner mucus (a runny nose). The main side effect of older antihistamines is drowsiness. They also can cause dry mouth, dizziness, and headache.

Capsules – There are many natural remedies available in capsule form and many manufactures.  You can also make your own that way you know what herb and only what herb is in it.  Capsule making machines available read my article Using a capsule making machine. Manufacturing has greatly improved and have paid attention to the demand for a pure product. If you do buy your capsules READ THE LABELS and see what’s in it.  I don’t trust anyone. But buying an herb in capsule form certainly is better than not having the herb at all.

Common Cold – It is one of the 200 types of viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract that primarily affects the nose (rhino) The most common one is called the rhinovirus. It is also call influence. A cold affects larynx, nose, throat, and sinuses. Signs and symptoms include coughing, headache, fatigue, fever, muscle aches, runny nose, sore throat, and sneezing.

Decoction – (Latin for ‘boil down’) The liquid resulting from concentrating the essence of a substance like a tea or plant roots by heating or boiling, especially a medicinal preparation made from a plant.

decongestantscause the blood vessels in the lining of the nose to narrow, reducing blood flow to the area, so you’re less congested and you produce less mucus. Decongestants don’t work with thick mucus they just dry you out more.   I often call it a cement wall. So you take more decongestants and get more congested. You may very well feel some of the decongestants side effects which include dizziness, high blood pressure, and nervousness. Used in Modern Medicine.  They never work for me.

demulcent – substance that lubricates, relieves and lines the irritated mucous membranes.  It is a healthy antioxidant and mucilaginous or an adhesive solution which allows it to protect the membranes lining

Expectorant – a medicine that thins mucus, phlegm and/or sputum and makes it easier for the body to secret. It is used especially to treat coughs.  Once the mucus is thinner, the body can easily expel it by its normal exits. Note an expectorant also needs increased water intake

You can also thin out the mucus with guaifenesin, a type of medicine called an expectorant.

Common Flu – According to the CDC, “No one seems to know the difference from the common cold vs the common flu.  They are caused by different viruses but with very similar symptoms.  In general, the flu is considered worse than a cold.  I guess i’d call it a serious cold.  Symptoms are more intense and worst than the common cold.

Essential oils – Many herbs can be applied topically using carrier oils, and essential oils or by mixing a few drops with water. Carrier oils are aloe vera, coconut oil, castor oil, mustard olive, or others.   The essential oils are Calendula Oil, Lavender Oil, Lemon grass oil, and Tea Tree Oil. By mixing a small amount of concentrated Essential oil like Lemongrass apply a few drops to Calendula oil and a larger amount of something like Coconut Oil.

Sinus – a recess, cavity, or channel, such as one in bone or a dilated channel for venous blood. An abnormal channel or fistula, permitting escape of toxins in mucus or pus.

Steam inhalation

An excellent home remedy to loosen throat mucus and clear your nasal passage is steam inhalation. The benefits of using steam to get rid of too much mucus in the throat can be boosted by adding essential oils that reduce inflammation, kill germs, and relieve congestion.

For example, tea tree oil has antimicrobial compounds that can help treat throat and upper respiratory tract infections. Also menthol (peppermint) oil is well-known for its ability to relieve congestion and treat the symptoms of sinus infections and asthma.

All you need to do is add a few drops of tea tree oil or menthol oil to a large bowl of boiling water. Place you head over the bowl and cover your head with a towel. Breathe deeply for 10 minutes to allow the steam and essential oils clear your airways and get rid of mucus. Repeat the steam inhalation 2-3 times a day until your symptoms clear and you no longer have any infection in your airways.  Don’t burn yourself.

Plant based Treatments

Plants came to this Earth before we did.  If it hadn’t been for their photosynthesis, and converting the sun’s light to energy, we would be around at all.  They have their own immune system, just like we do and have over time developed many ways to handle toxins including fungus and Mold overgrowth.  Using natures plant growth as treatments makes a great deal of sense.

Virus – Are infectious agent that can only thrive and reproduce inside the host body. It is smaller than bacteria.

Useful Herb’s for thinning mucus

Anise, Aimalayan, Coltsfoot, Eucalyptus, Echinacea, Honey, Licorice Root Marshmallow Root, Mullein, Peppermint, Salt Water, Slippery Elm Root, and Thyme.

Once I finally understood the power of the herbs in tea form, I realized I had found what I was looking for.  It works and whenever I have used them again they still work.

The herbs I call anti-mucus performs what modern medicine calls an  expectorant which makes the mucus easier to cough up.

Herbs used for Tea

There is a long list of herbs, oils, and products all completely from the World of Nature and her wonders.  I have found these teas both concentrated and regular to be of extreme help.  In fact I have been using them not only to get rid of my last cold I had about 2 1/2 years ago and never saw again.  But they have been the center of my detoxing with amazing results.  I used What I call anti-mucus capsules which I made myself and anti-mucus teas these were easier for clearing mucus of the respiratory tract. The Decoction is very concentrated I am using that form more for detoxing than for a cold.

Making Teas

Tea Making Tips

I cannot stress the importance of covering your tea while it steeps. Not only does it keep it piping hot, it traps all the steam and any of the volatile oils in the steam (and their benefits) in the cup for you to inhale when you uncover it.

Need instructions on how to make tea’s

The one I recommend I call anti mucus tea for short.

Mucus Thinning Tea *

1/3 Tablespoon chopped licorice (leaf or root)

1/3 Tablespoon chopped slippery elm bark

1/3 Tablespoon chopped marshmallow root

1 cup water

To make the tea, take all 3 herbs and steep this mixture in hot water until it becomes tea strength

Drink 3-6 cups a day for 1 – 2 months, or as needed for maintenance.

I also buy the herbs in powdered form and combine it into capsules and take them often.

* John Douillard from LifeSpa including his book Eat Wheat

Remember to Increase your intake of Natural Vitamin C.  The best form is fresh citrus like an orange, and lemon.

Other Herbs

Here are other herbs.  You can make concentrated or normal 1 cup teas. Concentrated teas take up to 4 cups with the loose tea and boil down to 1 cup.  It is strained in a mental filter for a stronger for of tea.

Cough syrups or lozenges like Wild Cherry Syrup, Peppermint, Slippery Elm are also made and very effective

Thayer’s Slippery Elm Lozenges, Wild Cherry inner bark lozenges or syrup and many other herbs are available.

Useful Expectorant and Demulcent Herbs

Anise in the treatment of respiratory conditions such as cough, bronchitis and asthma. Anise contains a compound called anethole, which is very effective in boosting the health of the bronchial cells. It is a powerful expectorant and is able to bring about the expulsion of accumulated mucous from the respiratory tract. Anise is also a very powerful anti-spasmodic agent. However, medical experts recommend that you avoid making use of this herb if you are already consuming anticoagulant medicines as this can result in adverse side effects. You must also make sure to consult your doctor regarding the correct dosage of this herb. I have not used this herb.

Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus Oil is mainly used for healing mucus membranes.  It is also useful for body pains, colds, fever, and sinus congestion.  You can apply a drop on a cotton ball and sniff it several times a day.  You can add it to water and use in a nebulizer or in steam therapy or in bath water.

Honey – is very effective except you can’t find real honey.  Most of what you find in the store is FAKE hear that Fake.  You can use up to 1 Teaspoon of honey a day if you get it from the Farmer who maintains the actual bee hive.

Garlic has strong antibacterial and antiseptic properties that make

Garlic – Eat it Raw and Eat it Daily

Garlic is antibacterial, antibiotic, anticancer, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-yeast, lowers blood pressure, thins blood, restores bowel ecology, prevents platelet clumping, helps detox the cells, helps digestion, boost immune system and helps fight many diseases, fights food poising bacteria, help insulin resistance and diabetes, once eaten repeals mosquitos, Cardiac protection from heart disease, brings oxygen to the cells or oxidizes the cells. It has been called “Russian Penicillin” because it is so effective with wounds and skin disorders.

Chopping and Crushing Garlic activates its healthy and powerful enzymes. The enzyme is called allicin a sulfur-containing molecule that gives garlic’s its pungent smell. When preparing garlic wait at least 5 minutes after crushing or cutting to allow allicin to form and mix with oxygen.

Please note to get the full power of Garlic DO NOT COOK IT use it raw. Research has found heating garlic all health benefits is lost. Cut a clove of garlic into small pieces that can be swallowed. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to bring out its health-promoting benefits. You can mix it with juice or liquid but swallow them whole. The ancients added garlic to their wine. You can also add crushed or chopped garlic at the end of your foods cooking process. DO NOT CHEW Raw — Once chewed garlic can turn HOT – HOT !! Once down it isn’t too hot to handle. Not all garlic is hot but YOU NEVER KNOW.

Licorice Root

Marshmallow Root

Mullein is an herb that possesses expectorant and suppressant properties, thereby making it effective in the treatment of chronic cough as well as sore throat. Mullein is usually consumed in the form of tea to treat chronic coughs. You can easily purchase mullein tea from any health store. In the herbal world Mullein grows wild along local highways and to extreme length like 15 feet. It is considered a very large weed. Just soak the leaves in a

large mason jar in hot water over night.  Cool, stain and drink in the morning. Note: when handling Mullein you might want to wear a nasal mask. The left over leaves cling to everything – no wonder it softens things so well.

Peppermint – contains menthol, which works as a decongestants.  Which loosens the mucus or phlegm present in the throat or lungs.

Salt – is used to gargle, and as use as a nasal saline rinse.  It is a demulcent in that it helps your system expel or cough up the thick colored mucus.  Salt also acts as an antimicrobial agent and does help reduce the thickness of the mucus, but is not considered a demulcent agent.

Colloidal Silver – is a natural substance made by suspending microscopic particles of silver in liquid. It has been used throughout history; it prevents the growth of algae, bacteria and other unwanted organism in additional to its many medicinal uses.  It has been replaced with chemical antibiotics, however it is still given to newborns to prevent eye infection during childbirth and used in hospitals and other treatment centers for cuts and burns.

Pathogens do not become resistant to silver as they do with man made chemical antibiotics.  According to records, “There is no known disease-causing organism that can live in the presence of even minute traces of simple metallic silver.”

From our past our eating utensils were made of pure silver and silver coated,  as a result it was called Silver Ware.  Silver isn’t a hard substance and it easily chips.  Our ancestors were getting small traces with every bite using their silver ware.

My Breathing

By J. L. McDaniel                                 December 25, 2019

Take a deep breath Means take a lot of air in the lungs not the chest. Try it! What moved – your shoulders, chest, or stomach?

It Isn’t That Easy

I didn’t realize it, until I started reading a book on Chinese Medicine, The Way of Qigong that I am not breathing naturally.  I have formed a dysfunctional Habit, like many others by breathing with my upper chest instead of into the full lung.

Improving but,

Years ago, I was sick, very sick.  Some of my conditions were COPD, Not being able to catch my breath (“Air Hunger”), Chronic Fatigue, Lack of Energy to even perform normal ADL’s like walking. Unable to stay awake “Brain Fog” to list a few.

My health has improved by eating natural foods and making other natural adjustments in my life.  Yet, I was still was experiencing periods of “Air Hunger” and “Chronic Fatigue” – extreme fatigue (like the extreme case of falling asleep while driving), and other indications of not feeling healthy and energetic.  I was still having  periods at work where I could not keep my eyes open even while having a conversation. Or I found myself saying “I can’t catch my breath”

This book on Chinese Medicine talked about Energy and Healing including breathing.  Breathing is a normal topic of most natural medicine procedures and I didn’t think much about it.  I said “We all have to do it — So What?

Chinese Medicine

The book asked me a simple question.

Well, I though “I’ll give it a try, I’ll try anything at least once” … so I read on.

Take a deep breath and what moved?

I took the deep breath, and read and suddenly stop reading dropped the book on the table, and realized I was doing dysfunctional breathing. I have been doing dysfunctional breathing for a long long time plus looking around most people were also doing dysfunctional breathing without realizing it.

Place you hand on your chest and the other hand on your stomach and take a deep breath what moved?

Different forms of breathing:

Chest vs. Stomach Breathing

Proper breathing is essential.  Not only is proper breathing essential during running and other intense exercise, it is essential for daily living. Natural Breathing is essential for a healthy body.  If you are not breathing properly or naturally you may experience periods of “Air Hunger”  or even  Hyperventilation.  Lack of oxygen isn’t good for the body and is responsible for most illness.

Air Hunger is a frightening feeling. It’s often attributed to “Getting Older” or “aging” and the need to slow down and take it easy. This feeling is not natural.  This feeling is simply your body asking for more air. Your body compensates with yawns or sighs, but this isn’t always very effective for more than a second or two. You quickly return to the un-natural condition, leaving you tired and unable to continue significant movement or exercise.

The condition is also call “Respiratory Acidosis” which refers to pH. An Acid balance means illness and pain.

Stomach Breathing

There Is An Easy Correction

There is something easy that can be done to help correct this condition and get more Oxygen.  It is so simple I could hardly believe it.  Just take a deep breath.  The hard part is —- Breath into your stomach not your chest. Many people, I know I’ve tested have resorted to upper chest breathing.  Ask them to take a deep breath and almost immediately you see the chest rise and even the shoulders.  They hold their breath showing how good they did.  But that isn’t a deep breath it all went into the top part of the lungs and that isn’t deep.

Breathing can come from one of two primary regions: your chest or your stomach: Understanding the differences between the two can have a significant impact on your endurance and energy throughout the day.  If you notice, while you’re resting and/or dropping off to sleep most people revert back to Stomach Breathing.  It’s during the day with it’s increase anxiety load, many people convert to only breathing with the chest and not the stomach.

Stomach Breathing is also taught in the gym, and/or natural healing procedures like Yoga, Chinese medicine, and many others.

This isn’t easy but I found it was best to blow out first then take the breath using your stomach works. Blow out saying “Phew” like blowing at a bug or shewing a fly. “Shew”

Shew Fly

Chest Breathing

Chest breathing refers to breaths from the top lobes of the lungs that use the chest muscles to inflate the lungs by pulling on the rib cage. In chest breathing, the chest expands and contracts with each breath while the abdominal area does not. These breaths tend to be short and quick, using only a small portion of the lungs and delivering a relatively minimal amount of oxygen to the bloodstream. Chest breathing is often associated with hyperventilation and a sensation of feeling out of breath, as you attempt to take in oxygen quickly despite the low air volume from each breath.

Stomach Breathing

Stomach breathing, also called belly or diaphragmatic breathing, refers to breaths that use your entire lung capacity. The diaphragm and abdominal muscles pull down on the abdominal cavity to fully inflate the lungs. The chest expands very little if at all while stomach breathing, while the abdominal area expands significantly. Breaths taken while stomach breathing are slow and deep, taking longer to inhale and exhale and delivering a significantly larger amount of oxygen to the bloodstream. The larger amount of air intake also allows you to exhale a larger amount of carbon dioxide, eliminating it from your body at a faster rate.

Breathing and Energy

Oxygen is essential for endurance and energy: Without sufficient oxygen, the body can’t produce the energy that the muscles need to continue performing under stress. If you’re chest breathing during exercise or competition, the relatively low volume of air that you take in with each breath significantly hinders your body’s ability to provide oxygen to the bloodstream for use in the energy conversion process. Stomach breathing increases endurance by providing much more oxygen to the bloodstream, allowing the body to convert fuel to energy for longer periods.

Improving Breathing

Lie on your back with your hands on your abdomen to see whether you typically are a chest or stomach breather. If you see your hands rise and fall, you’re a stomach breather, but if your hands remain mostly stationary, you’re a chest breather. Take a deeper breath, contracting your chest muscles slightly as necessary until you see your hands start to rise. Practice this several times until you can feel the pulling in the abdominal cavity and are able to take deep stomach breaths without significant effort. Place books or other light weights on your abdomen and repeat these deep breaths for three to five minutes to provide exercise for the diaphragm and abdominal muscles involved. Repeat this exercise regularly and make a conscious effort to breathe from the diaphragm whenever you notice that you’re breathing from your chest; as your muscles become stronger and your body becomes accustomed to stomach breathing, you’ll take deeper stomach breaths more naturally and without conscious prompting.

IT Isn’t Easy But It Works

It Isn’t Easy – I Know I have Tried.  Here are some pictures that might help.  Once I found a way to relax and take some deep breaths using my stomach, I found the major feeling of fatigue (Where I couldn’t keep my eyes open like while driving) have significantly improved.  I found all sorts of things improving like feeling stronger, better concentration, more endurance.  I can now walk without feeling the pain and panic of “I Can’t Breath”.  I can simply continue walking.  I may have to stop and think about taking some stomach breaths but I almost feel like a kid again

You get twice if not more oxygen belly breathing then chest.  I try to remember to take some deep breaths during the day.  It has taken a while but the body is almost doing it automatically now.  At first I thought it was impossible.

Sugar Beet an Example of Good Carb/Bad Carb

By Joan McDaniel                                                 December 3, 2019

As I explained in my last post, I used the knowledge from my grandparents of how to use foods and common sense and their wisdom to regain my health.  This post covers the type of foods I used.  I started with the Saturated Fat of Coconut oil and as I said in Coconut Oil Helped Me Get Well Again. – The fire of inflammation I mean.

I stopped all Trans Fat and used Coconut Oil on everything including washing my hair and giving it to the cat for its digestion problems (hair balls).  I first cut down slowly on the sugar but that was hard to do.  While focusing on Sugar I began to try to understand the Carb.

Then I worked on understanding the Carb.

What follows is a re-write of my original article

The Beet an Example of Good Carb vs. Bad Carb

Re-Writing, Re-Reading and Re-Learning

As I Re-read these articles, I am finding I have forgotten many of the original findings.  I have been detoxing (slowly) over these 8 years and as I release hidden toxins which sort of restarts the battle of getting well over again I find quite a few things I had forgotten. Getting well again is simple and complex.  Simple in what you eat or don’t but complex in learning how to work with your magnificent human body. It does most of the work, of course, I just have to learn how to listen This is complex, but extremely rewarding for this God created machine.

Back to the Carb

There seems to be a great deal of confusion concerning the Carb.  I hear people saying about their diets —- “I have decided to stop eating Carbs and start eating j____ fill in the blank.  Protein or Fat or …drink beer or…”

But that isn’t a very good diet and will do nothing to help your body get the nutrition it needs to use the healing energy that has been covered with years of junk or toxins and fat. What is needed is a balanced diet consisting of Fat, Protein and Carbs.

Yes that’s right carbs.  Good Carbs that is.

Even though this article talks about a good example of Good Carb being the Red Beet, It covers the subject of Good Carb vs Bad Carb.  There are many other good carbs like a carrot but the beet is a great start.

What makes the beet unique is; it helps your body return proper digestion and starts the slow detoxing process. Proper digestion is also helped by eating fermented food but, I had to learn how to tolerate Fermented Foods again.  It took some time before I could eat  fermented foods again.  My system was already fermented.

I started eating the red beet daily to help me re-regulate my body with energy generating foods without over taxing or stimulating it.  Treat your body nicely while you slowly waking it up and getting it to moving again.

Picture of New Pic Good Carb/Bad

Before you start even thinking about getting rid of toxins or losing weight or fat where your body has stored years and years of toxins — you need good food.

Now on with the old article.

The Beet an Example of Good Carb vs. Bad Carb

By Joan McDaniel                          April 12, 2014

Simple Carbohydrates and Complex Carbohydrate or Good vs. Bad.

Today I’m going to review the beet. I have begun using it to help me detox so I did a little research but first, I thought I cover the subject of Carbohydrates. Since I found my way to regain my health was to avoid simple carbs and processed food. All that food did was convert itself into sugar devoid of any other nutrient. It gave my body nutrition but only one kind that being sugar. I missed out on all the other badly needed antioxidants. Without proper nutrition the body’s immune system can’t go to war and you get sick. So I said, “I’ll avoid carbs in my diet”. Yet about all I am eating now are carbs are at least complex carbs. So let’s review; just what are Good Carbs vs. Bad Carbs? Then we will talk about the magnificent beet.

We all need Carbohydrates they are what provide our body energy. All fruits and vegetables are carbohydrates and so are candy, white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, and most sodas and processed Sugar. So why is one good for you like the complex carb and one not as good like the simple carb? More about this a little further down in the article but, it depends on their chemical makeup. The simpler the carb is considered bad for all it contains is sugar.

Good Carbs vs. Bad Carbs

Complex Carb                                 Simplex Carb

The complex carb is considered good, not only because it contains natural sugar but other nutrients like natural fiber and vitamins. It takes the body longer to break down and use the complex carb where it breaks the simple carb down almost instantaneously. Read the section Carbohydrates and Sugar  in my article on sugar high sugar low and away we go to see what simple sugars do to the body.

The Nutritious Beet

The beet is a carbohydrate like all vegetables. It has a high sugar content but eaten in moderation it is good for you. Read on and learn more about the magnificent beet.

What Has More Nutrition the Beet Root or the Beet Top?

The many ways to eat red beets

They can be eaten raw when grated, they can be cooked or steamed, pickled and or they can be juiced. For a complete enjoyment of the vegetable eat the whole beet, its root, stems and top each provides major nutrition.

Don’t Toss Away the Best Part of the Beet – the Top.

We all know about the beet root but what about the tops? Don’t just throw them away or for the compost do yourself a nutritional favor and eat the tops. The Green leaves of the beet can contain more important nutrients than the beet itself. You can eat them along with your other greens and they are sugar free.

Did You Know there are Two Kinds of Beets?

sugar beet

They look like turnips

Sugar Beet

One is called the Sugar beet and the other is called Red beet. The Sugar Beet is white and the Red beet is dark red or even purple. Both beets have a sweet taste.

The sugar beet can measure up to four feet long, and weigh three to five pounds and can produce about five ounces of sugar. About 18 percent of the sugar beet is pure sugar. The sugar beet is less round than the average beet and resembles a turnip.

The Common Red Beet

The red beet is famous for its color which is highly concentrated and known to leave a reddish color residue or pigment. The color simply bleeds and stains wherever it touches. The body doesn’t even absorb the color and may turn your urine pink and your stool red. The red beet has less sugar, 7.6 g in an average sugar beet but still is considered to be the vegetable with the highest amount of natural sugar.

A quick tip is you can use fresh lemon juice to keep the beet from bleeding their natural red color into your salad.

You don’t see many White Beets in the Market

The sugar beet is used by the food industry and is one of the main sources of table sugar (or refined sugar). What we refer to as table sugar comes from either the sugar beet or cane sugar which has been further refined.

The red beet is what you purchase in the store or market. Raw red beets have a crunchy texture that turns soft and buttery when they are cooked.

Now What About those Beet leaves?

Eat the Whole Beet, Stems, Tops and all

Benefits of Beets Greens

Eating the beet green may be the healthiest form of the plant. In fact the leafy tops can have more iron than spinach. They contain less sugar than the beet and more calcium, copper, fiber, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, plant protein, potassium, protein, Vitamin A, B6, C and zinc. Beet greens help strengthen you immune system by stimulating the production of antibodies and white blood cells.

Beet leaves have a lively, bitter taste similar to chard. The traditional Easter European soup called borscht uses beet leaves as the main ingredient. The leaves can be juiced, added to salad, eaten raw, pickled, or sautéed lightly along with other greens. I sometimes seep them in hot water for vegetable stock or for tea.

The Beet itself Is One of the Healthiest Foods

Beets are a unique healing vegetable. Beets contain a variety of unique health-boosting nutrients that you may not be getting elsewhere. Plus, they’re delicious! Some of these health-boosting benefits include;

Lower Your Blood Pressure

Studies have found that the naturally occurring nitrates in beets help lower blood pressure in a matter of hours. The nitrates in beets are converted into nitric oxide in your body. Nitric oxide then helps relax blood and dilate your blood vessels, improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure.

Beets help increase Stomach Acid.

Not to get side tracked but a word about Digestion and pH. Beets are on of the many foods provided by Nature that help you digest your food.  Beets contain betaine which your system them converts to stomach acid hydrochloride HCL used to digest your food.  The concept of stomach acid is extremely misunderstood in todays Medical world but let’s just leave it at “What you need is stronger stomach acid not less” and beets help you build a stronger digestive system.

I have written on the importance of stomach acid here. And the importance of a pH balance.  Did you know stomach acid has the same amount of acid as battery acid here

That is how your system works.  It is call pH — It is Something like how a battery works but much better.

pH Scale

Not Stomach Acid and Battery Acid is the same

I Eat Beets Daily

I have beets at least once a day.  I mix them with just about anything from apples, carrots, cottage cheese, honey, to sauerkraut They are a refreshing change to the taste buds.  You can even Mix them with a strong spicy mustard.  I eat them as a side dish once a day.  After I cook the beet, I save the liquid and mix it with coconut milk.  There are many ways to eat them.

Helps Fight Inflammation

Beets are unique in their source of Polynutrients called betaines. This nutrient helps protects cells, enzymes, and proteins from environmental stress. Beets contain powerful phytonutrients that give beets their deep crimson color. Phytonutrients or antioxidants help the body combat free-radical damage which causes inflammation. In other words it helps replenish oxygen that the free-radical took away.

Rich in Valuable Nutrients and Fiber

Beets are high in immune-boosting vitamin C, fiber, and essential minerals like potassium (essential for healthy nerve and muscle function) and manganese (which is good for your bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas). Beets also contain the B vitamin folate.

Detoxification Support

Beets have unique natural components that make them unique and great for detoxifying the body. Your body every night while you sleep naturally detoxes. Beets are a traditional detoxing agent, they are the perfect food for body cleansing. Beets are extremely high in plant ‘flavonoids’ and beta-carotene. The Betalin pigment and flavonoids in beets help the body rid itself and eliminate the broken down toxins. Eating beets along with carrots help stimulate and improve overall liver function.

To make your detox more effective and powerful for the liver, add fresh dandelion leaves and cucumbers to the dish or juice.

What is the Difference between Natural and Refined Sugars?

Processed Sugar and Candy            Natural Sugar Vegetables

We are consuming too much sugar. Most of our diet consists of high processed foods that are loaded with refined sugar. We think nothing of eating candy and overconsumption of all forms of sugary food. Let me say again in review; all vegetables and fruit are carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates – Are constructed out of sugar. There are several forms of sugar fruit sugar or fructose, Natural sugar, raw sugar, processed and refined sugar.

All vegetables have natural sugar.

All vegetables produce natural sugar as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Some vegetables have more sugar than others.

Sugars; clockwise from top-left: White refined

Unrefined, brown, and unprocessed cane

Processed sugar is processed to be a pure white table sugar required by the consumer. It gives the product a pure look, gives it greater shelf life and is easier to handle does not clump or stick.

Types of Sugar

It is true to your body doesn’t know the difference – sugar is sugar. When you eat more sugar or carbohydrates than your body can use, the excess energy is converted to fat by your liver. Sugar is Sugar but there are different forms of carbohydrates or sugar. Natural and Raw sugars contain less sugar for they also have other nutrients and vitamins. High Fructose Corn Syrup, Processed or refined have more sugar for the other nutrients and vitamins have been stripped out by the manufacturing process. The manufacture is attempting to produce a product with a long shelf life and without any impurities.

Natural and Raw sugars help control the sugar rushes and cravings created by process or refined sugar. They can be helpful when attempting to break the hold of sugar addiction.

There are various types of sugar derived from different sources.

Brown sugars – A completely refined granulated sugar with the grains coated in molasses to produce a demerara, light or dark sugar. This sugar is used in baked goods, confectionery and other sugary baked items.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is created in – the lab. HFCS is highly processed and has been linked to obesity and many other serious and chronic health problems. HFCS is now added to just about any and all processed foods such as; breads, cakes, candies, cookies, energy drinks, soft drinks and more. It is a corn-based sweetener. It’s about an equal blend of glucose and fructose to make it sweeter. It’s increased used occurred around 1975 because of its low cost at the time of a sugar price war.

Fructose – A natural sugar found in fruit. Some fruits are very low in fructose like lemons and all the berries but some can be very high like apples, and bananas. See my article and table on Fructose.

Natural sugar – All plants produce sugar as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Natural sugars are broken down more slowly by the body and have less calories than the other processed sugars. In addition, fruits and vegetables have other nutrients besides sugar like antioxidants, calcium, fiber, iron, manganese, minerals, organic salts, Vitamins B and C. Natural sugars are a complete food which lead to more stable blood sugar levels.

Vegetables with the highest Natural Sugar in Grams

Sugar Beet               17 – 18

Sugar Cane              13 – 18

Red Beets                 7

Corn Sweet               6.2

Onion Sweet             5

White Potato             4.7

Carrot                        4.7

Peas Sweet               4.3

Red Pepper Sweet    4.2

Sweet Potato             4.2

Cabbage                    3

Beets have the highest sugar content of all vegetables then corn both of which refined sugar is made. Yet eating the beet adds some major nutrition and health improvement which cannot be ignored. Eating the beet tops as much as you want they don’t contain any sugar.

Processed sugar – is also called “sucrose” is totally devoid of nutrients and has added chemicals. Processed sugar raises blood sugar levels fast. You get strong energy/hunger swings. These hunger swings become cravings. Think of the white pure table sugar and the sugar in candy, candy bars, added in fruit drinks, and sodas.

Raw sugar is straight from the sugar cane or sugar beet plant. Raw sugar isn’t refined and comes directly from the juices of the plant that have been dried to form sugar crystals.

Refined sugar or Table sugar starts with Natural Sugars but after the refining process only the sugar is left. Refined sugar is higher in calories, with added chemicals to remove impurities. It is heated to such a high heat all nutrients are lost. The processing strips away any fiber, minerals, nutrients or vitamins and leaves 100 percent sucrose.

Stevia Stevia – A sugar replacement. It is not classified as a Natural, Processed, Raw or Refined. It is a naturally sweet plant native to Paraguay that is 30 times sweeter than sugar in its unprocessed form. With more than 1,000 studies and patents on Stevia, it is known to be all-natural, contain zero calories and have a zero glycemic index. Through a patented process the pure glycosides can be extracted from the Stevia leaves and turned into an intensely sweet powder that is 300 times sweeter than sugar. See my article on Stevia.

Sugar is Sugar take all in Moderation

It is true though, sugar is sugar and you need to eat it in moderation. You cannot eat as much as you like Natural, Processed, Raw or otherwise.

Beets! One of the healthiest foods

You can’t beat them for nutrition

Beets are packed with nutrition. They are an excellent source of folate, and research has shown that the red pigment, betacyanin, protects against heart disease and cancer.

Beets are loaded with potassium. Cup for cup, beet roots have about the same amount of potassium as bananas, and beet greens have twice as much.

Add to that the fact the beets are high in fiber, low in calories, and inexpensive, and you have an all around winner as a nutritious addition to your diet.

BEETS :: 150 Healthiest Foods

The History of the Beet

The original natural beet grew in the wild during prehistoric times in North Africa, Asia and Europe along the seashore. At that time people ate only the green tops and threw the root away. Ancient Romans first cultivated beets to use the roots as food. The tribes that caused the fall of Rome spread eating beets throughout northern Europe where they were first used for animal fodder and later for human consumption. In the 19th century it was discovered that the sugar beet was a source of sugar. Benjamin Delessert invented the sugar extraction process and the first sugar factory was built in Poland. When the British restricted the sugar cane as an blockade against Napoleon and during the Napoleonic Wars, he decreed that the beet was to be used as the primary source of sugar.

The use of beets for sugar spread across Europe and the United States, especially because beets were easier to grow than sugar cane. Beets can be grown in colder climates and take less growing area.

Tips for Preparing Beets

Rinse gently under cold running water. Since beet juice can stain your skin, wearing kitchen gloves is a good idea when handling beets. If your hands become stained during the cleaning and cooking process, simply rub some lemon juice on them to remove the stain.

Cut off the root and the stems leaving about 1 inch of stem and 2 inches of the tap root.

The Healthiest Way of Cooking Beets

The best way to use beets is through juicing. Juicing is very expensive and I have found you have a tendency to add sweet things to make the juice taste nice. I am not a juicer and enjoy chewing my food. But the beet is way too hard to even take a bite out of they need to be softened either by a machine, a grader or cooking. Beets as all vegetables can lose their valuable nutrition benefits when subjected to heat. But you can cook beets lightly only to soften.

You can boil Beets.

It has been recommended to cut the beets into quarters to reduce the cooking time and boil in a small amount of water at low heat until a fork passes through the beet. Cook the beet until just tender, it may take up to 30 minutes. I like to chew beets for the taste but I also don’t want to break my teeth. I have found other vegetables that need to be cooked first, asparagus, Cabbage, large carrots, broccoli, green beans, bell peppers, sweet potato, white potato, and the turnip. I am sure there are many more that’s all I can think of right now. I lightly steam most of the hard to chew vegetables.

Once the beets are fork tender, remove the beets with a ladle to save the juice. Rinse the beets under cold filtered water to stop the cooking process. Keep the beet juice; you can make syrup by adding stevia or just for drinking as a juice. I add it as a base to my tea.

Or you can Steam Beets.

Steaming veg

To maximize beets nutrition and flavor you can steam then for about 15 minutes. Fill the bottom of the steamer with 2 inches of water and bring to a rapid boil. Add beets and cover. Beets are cooked when you can insert a fork or the tip of a knife into the beet.

Peel beets by setting them on a cutting board and rubbing the skin off with a paper towel. Wearing kitchen gloves will help prevent your hands from becoming stained.

I do not peel my vegetables in most cases. I use the peel as added fiber, many people do not like the taste of the peel. I do like to peel the beets though.

grated beets

Grate the raw beet

You can grate beets in your salad and use lemon to help the beets from turning your salad red.

I have made a habit of not giving out recipes because I never really follow them.  But I will tell you, I eat beets as a side dish almost every day of the week.  I mix them with just about anything.  I get them from the farmer.  Wash and Cook in a Crock pot until I can stick a fork into the beet.  I will cook the greens and eat them separately, but the stems aren’t as easy to eat so I give them to the birds.  I then cut the beets up into pieces put them in jars and then into the freezer.  I have beets all year long.  Once defrosted, I eat a handful mixed with everything from sauerkraut, tart apples, carrots, cabbage, mixed with mustard, or vinegar or just about anything.  It has a taste that adds something to the meal.  I never make it the same way time after time.

Soda Drinks and Sugar

By Joan McDaniel                           November 23, 2019

In my last post I said my next post will be about the good carb vs bad carb.  I happened to see this post I did back in 2012 and realized I should provide a bit more info on what is a carb especially one that converts directly to sugar.

This is a re-write of my original article which includes an old video from the Health Ranger, I surprised it is still available.

Soda Pop Sugar Shocker Demo!

August 31, 2012

By Natural Health’s Health Ranger   7/24/2010

Before I got sick, I was a borderline diabetic.  My blood work showed an elevated A1C very close to being a full blown diabetic. I had already reduced my my sugar intake before I got so sick.  But was still eating a garbage diet, drinking and smoking regularly. I wasn’t a soda drinker but made up for by a massive diet of bad carbs.

I am also a believer in that most people are border line diabetic whether they have an elevated A1C blood test or not.  People are running around in diabetic highs and lows all the time.  People’s daily emotions vary wildly during the day.

I know people who drink energy drinks, fruit juices, and/or soda’s, diet or not.  They drink this stuff all day long.  They are getting more sugar than they realize. People who are seriously addicted to this huge amount of sugar, they are in serious denial as to any harmful side effects.  But, It simply just tastes so good to give up even for a few minutes.

I am re-publishing this video again with some reprints of product labels to drive home just how bad these drinks are.

Most people have no idea just how much sugar is loaded into soda pop and other popular drinks.  This demonstration makes the unseen seen.  Big beverage can’t hide behind deceptive marketing forever.

Did you know that 99% of all beverages are boiled/filled with preservatives and chemicals to maximize shelf life?

As if that being sterilized with excessive heat and the addition of chemical preservatives weren’t bad enough, they’re also loaded with sugar or even more harmful artificial sweeteners to maximize taste. That’s right, to maximize profits, they load ‘em up with the cheapest sweeteners available. To make sure they don’t go bad during storage and distribution, they boil them and add harmful preservatives (more artificial chemicals).

According to Dr. Mercola1, the food and beverage industries spend twice as much as the pharmaceutical industry telling us what is “good” for us.

To repeat what the video reported:

1 gram is .2 Teaspoons

An average soda contains

40 grams of sugar 40 x .2  = 8 Teaspoons ******** (8)

65 grams of sugar 65 x .2  = 13 Teaspoons That is a lot of sugar ************* (13)

Label for Regular Coke

Diet Soda isn’t much better

39 g x .2 = 7.8 Teaspoons

Carbohydrates and Sugar

A quick note on Carbohydrates and Sugar.  Carbs is a detailed subject but, an important lesson I learned; When you eat more refined carbohydrates than your body can use they are converted to instant sugar.  If you noted on the label above,  a typical energy drink contains 28 g of Carbohydrates and 27 g of Sugar. This is the same as drinking pure sugar-water.  Consumption of extra carbohydrates, cause a sudden spike of blood glucose then as suddenly a crash.

In other words drinking this much sugar-water results in a roller coaster ride of highs and lows leading to daily fluctuations in energy and alertness, and possibly to eventual chronic adrenal exhaustion

blood sugar

You drink enough of this stuff your life is one big ROLLER COASTER RIDE

Your body cannot adjust to these up and down and over time it cannot fight the resulting inflammation.  These sugar highs and low will in time numb your brain and produce a zombie like activity level. Also called “Brain Fog”

You may think this allows you to maintain a high activity level but over time you body cannot keep it up. This may be just the kind of life style you think you need or want or whatever.  Your young and think your invincible but in time Sugar, Caffeine and excess carbs build up and cause major body changes. What does your body do with this excess toxic material???? It buries it in your fat cells and you gain weight.

In case you also need an illustration about the Energy all this sugar gives your body.  It does but your body doesn’t not only not need this much it burns it off so fast you can’t use that kind of instant energy constantly through the day except to fill in the low’s after the tremendous highs.

Artificial Sugar isn’t any better

Also please note Artificial sugar isn’t any better for you for the amount of chemicals are very destructive to you body and its energy.  You may think you get energy but only for short periods of time then a big let down and brain fog

Drinking Sugar Free is not a solution.

Now if you think you can drink the sugar-free variety of these drinks to avoid the damage, think again.

Low Carbohydrate Monster loaded with sucrose a form of Asperitine  and 2,500 mg of an Energy Blend that’s loaded with who knows what plus a whole lot of caffeine.  There is also new evidence that Diet foods and drinks can actually cause not prevent Diabetes.

Drinking Sugar Free is not a solution.

Try using some of your forgotten Common Sense and start remembering and listening to the workings of your body

Start by stopping the intake of high sugar drinks. Start looking at the label and start putting the soda can down don’t open it and walk away.  I don’t have any short cuts on how to break the sugar habit it took me some time I had to work with other tastes like bitter sour etc.  It wasn’t very easy, but respect for a healthy, energetic, pain free, clear headed body was my driving force. Start by taking your time but stop the high sugar drinks.

Till next Time,

How I Regained My Health

How I Regained My Health

By Joan McDaniel                   November 21, 2019

This Blog is dedicated to how I regained my health. I started this learning project by remembering my first exposure to wisdom and common sense. I was in awe listening to my Grandparents stories about traditional American living on a Farm in Kansas. My head was filled with stories about Cowboy and Indians and the early American Settlers of the midwestern Farmland of the Great Plains. They lived off the land before the Depression and after World War II.  My motivation: to recover the form of thinking I knew made my family strong.  I wanted to re-gain my health, drive, energy, and fix fuzzy thinking (Foggy brain that is).

Our ancestors have been around for about six million years, and modern human evolved about 200,000 years ago. We climbed out of our cave before we learned to talk . This advancement relied more on truth or principles of common sense and trail and error.  These truths were communicated to each other in the form of stories and nursery fables.  It wasn’t until recently the use of tradition and common sense has been replaced by Science and experimentation. Production efficiency is more important to this profit driven society.

I’m not against science or progress but somehow I feel like we have forgotten something.  The world’s population seems to be getting sicker.  A global survey study shows “People lose more ‘years of healthy life’ to illness now than they did in the early 1990.  That wasn’t very long ago. According to this article there are 5 reason for us getting sicker and weaker and what we can do about it.  According to a CNBC article US. death rate increases for the first time in two decades

Since I got so sick and have recovered by the food I ate, I asked the question are we any better off now then only 30 years ago? Has something gone wrong with our progress in obtaining health and happiness? In fact, you can’t seem to find very much to be happy about in todays day-to-day.  It is as if we have lost our Souls, our goals, and our reason for being alive. All that has been replaced by greed.  Greed for money more and more money efficiency and control. Are we too busy teaching and learning not how to think but what to think?

I recently read this article from edweek and I agree.  It is my opinion, we should be less machinelike and more humanlike with the teaching of analytical thinking, creativity, critical thinking, curiosity, problem-solving, and a love of learning itself.

Human-automaton and numbing creation must end. To succeed in a world of automation will require being as un-machinelike as possible. Have we become zombie like without any desire or drive who have forgotten what truth is and means?

According to Google Artificial Intelligence is doing just fine.  There is great anticipation for when we will be totally replaced.  Has our greed for control, or oneness and power allowed science to actually replace the human with Artificial Intelligence?

These Moral Question May be Above my Pay Grade

I don’t have an answer but working and living with a bunch of trans-humans isn’t quite the future I was looking for.  What ever happened to the happy and healthy human filled with laughter, knowledge and wisdom? Something like how I remember my GrandParents and family. Yes, and something I remember me as a Kid.

I found it !!!! I found ol’ Common Sense

I spent the last 8 years learning how to get well again. I made use of  the natural world around me.  Using my local farmers and the information I gained from them.

I was extremely lucky to come along when the Internet was free and the information wasn’t censored.  I thank my lucky nature and guardian angle,  I found the Internet before it became PC and politicalized.  It has now become a tool behavior and mind control.

The 20th Century saw the creation of the world of science. Great technical progress has propelled man from walking bare foot to standing on the moon.  We can replace many parts of the human body and current Artificial intelligence has great drive to replace the whole human being with an artificial and mechanical human being.

I am from the old school and I will not ever be replaced with AI.  AI may be good it may be bad.  All I know is I’m not a Robot and I can’t get well doing what a robot does.  I live in a world full of my generated energy warmth, love, hope and a creative ability no AI robot could ever replace my love of life.

Sorry at being so long winded, but I got well by regaining common sense and one of the first pieces of knowledge was the importance of the carb at least the right carb which I cover in my next article.

Now getting back to real Life and real Nature, and its source of energy and health starting with something simple —  the sugar Beet.

I first found the importance of Saturated Fat.  I stopped all trans Fat and began using Coconut Oil on everything even the Cat.

Then I worked on understanding the Carb.  My next article will talk about the good carb bad carb by my discussion of what I found about the Sugar Beet.

Until next time

My Eat a Good Salad Lately?

By Joan McDaniel                       September 19, 2019

Looking for Good Carbohydrates

Once I decided to begin eating nutritional foods to help regain my health, I found out about Good Carb/Bad Carb.  My article on The Beet an example of good carb vs bad carb covers my research.  Basically a bad carb is called “Simple” and a good carb is called “Complex”. Processed foods are “Simple” and natural foods like lettuce are “Complex”.

Looking around at food options, I ran into Lettuce.  Nothing can be more natural than home grown lettuce.  I spent time looking into lettuce and ran into Kale.  My article called Kale, the King of the Greens – Leafy Green Kale That is.  That article talks about all forms of lettuce including the King of Green— Kale.  Lettuce including Kale is a healthy carbohydrate or good carb.  You can eat as much lettuce as you want without a worry.  This carb is good for you.

Since, I always liked lettuce, I started eating and growing lettuce.  Green Leaf and Roman lettuce was easy to grow, easy to eat and easy to digest. I also kept running into Kale. Kale provides more nutritional value for fewer calories than almost any other food around.  If you looking to rebuild your immune system and regain your strength,  look no further than Kale — That is why it is called “The King Of Greens”

It is true, I liked lettuce but I normally had it piled heavily with Salad Dressing. Now that I was considering making lettuce not a side dish but a main dish, I would be eating a great deal of it.

This created a problem. If eating healthy including a great deal of eating lettuce, how will I make lettuce taste like something besides lettuce? Remember I still was very addicted to sugar.

Addicted to Sugar and Salad Dressing

Since I was so addicted to sugar I couldn’t taste anything except sugar. But sugar was my problem for it doesn’t heal anything including the Immune System. In fact, sugar was a major reason I was so sick.

Kale nutritious value makes it qualified to be called a superfood.  Although Kale and many other forms of lettuce can be eaten raw, it can be boiled, massaged in lemon juice, sautéed or steamed.

With a strong desire and motivation to get well, and a great deal of mind over matter— it was still tough getting it all chewed and swallowed with any kind of enjoyment so I began to look closer at  Salad Dressing.  I use to love Thousand Island Dressing.

What I found, was a big surprise !!!

On with the old article

Eat a Good Salad Lately?

By Joan McDaniel                                  July 18, 2012

Continuing the story of my research into nutrition while trying to get well again, I turn to the subject of Fats.

If the answer to the Salad question is yes, the next question is; What type of salad dressing did you use?

Label Reading

I would spent, what seemed like hours looking at the labels of salad dressing bottles. I bet the answer to the question Eat a Good Salad Lately, would be a Fat-Free Salad because that is all I can find to buy.  I tried  my local grocery store, fast-food deli, my favorite restaurant, or my friendly Health Food Store.  Where ever I go to shop, I see rows and rows of proudly labeled FAT-FREE Dressing.

You can also use oils for a salad dressing.  This article does not address oils.  The subject of Oil is complex and I address it in my article Lets Talk Cooking Oil. This article is looking at the subject of Fat and Fat-Free.  Besides Oil alone does not make lettuce taste any different. You need Zest for your salad.

These dressing may be fat-free but normally are loaded with insulin resistant generating sugars, especially High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). It seems things that have had the fat removed don’t taste very good so the manufactures have added sugar and lots of it.  The problem with salad dressing may be the added sugar but the real problem is called “FAT FREE”. Don’t even think Sugar-Free for it is worse. You are better off with Sugar.  See my article My Health and the Big Propaganda Money Train

What’s wrong with Fat?

Sugar isn’t the only problem with Salad Dressings – Fat Free isn’t good either.  Besides what is wrong with Fat????

I could eat the salad natural or raw without any dressing, but as I was finding, food can have zest without being harmful. You just can’t use sugar.  You may not know it, but there is a world of herbs, spices and other great tasting things available that generate zest or taste.

Fat tastes great especially in the form of walnuts, olives, cheese, flakes of coconut and a whole lot more.  Adding Sea Salt and Stevia Sugar is an interesting variety also.  Just like with carbohydrates there is good and bad fat. Vinegar also comes in many non-sugar varieties like balsamic vinegar.

Generally, anyone who is concentrating on the health benefits of foods start with eating something that consists of more than the normal Standard American Diet “side dish” salad.

Normal American Standard American Diet (SAD) Salad

The salads ingredients generally contain more than a hunk of iceberg lettuce under a layer of artificially colored plastic flavored French dressing.  (In fact, I don’t think you could get a Frenchman to eat French dressing).

I was struck with the thought, the worst place for a fat-free product is, on a salad.  Without being too difficult, or technical, it is hard to define what exactly constitutes a salad.  But a good salad generally contains lettuce and other vegetables.  Now most of us have been told, by our mothers

and even by the Food pyramid food police

2006 Ex Mayor Bloomberg Announced Food Standards – Guidelines for food served by N.Y. City (schools) including a soda ban on supersize soda.

VEGGIES ARE GOOD FOR YOU. They contain vitamins.

Exactly, Fat-Soluble vitamins or minerals which cannot be absorbed by the body unless they are eaten with fat.  Fat-Soluble Vitamins- A, D, E, and K need fat to be absorbed by the body.

Many of these vitamins function as an antioxidant and protect against free-radical damage. To be dissolved and used by the body you must eat fat.  In other words, to stop disease cause by free-radicals damage YOU MUST EAT FAT.

So why are you putting Fat-Free Salad dressing on that great salad?  You might as well feed the salad to the family pet.  The vitamins in that salad won’t do you any good.  A vitamin tablet will not help for they too need fat to be absorbed by the body.

All the minerals and vitamins that are in the salad to fight free-radical damage are blocked by the added fat-free hydrogenated free radical generating salad dressing.  Sort of like a Catch 22 problem. What you really eating is just causing an internal war that may only be ended with an antacid. (See my next post on the dangers of antacids.)

Now let us do a quick review of fats.

Fats and Oils consist of molecules of fat molecules known as fatty acids.

There are three different broad categories;

Saturated, Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated.

Monounsaturated, and saturated fats are essential to unlock the nutrients found in salads and vegetables.

Saturated Fat is Animal fats (Lard), beef tallow,  butter, cheese, chicken fat, coconut and palm oil, eggs, ghee (clarified butter), milk, mutton tallow, Nutmeg oil, Peanut Oil, Sour cream, and Vinegar were the common crucial fats used throughout the history of mankind and maintaining healthy cells, healthy organs, and a healthy body.

Monounsaturated fat – is two hydrogen atoms short of being a saturated fat. Olive oil is mostly Monounsaturated then ¼ saturated and polyunsaturated.

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids are: Almond, Avocados, Butterfat, Grape Seed, Olive, Peanut, Pumpkin, Rapseed (canola) and, Sesame. Good source for fat but become toxic if heated.  Heating causes the oil to become oxidized.

So add Walnuts, Olives, Eggs, Cheese, and anything else that is a fat to that vegetable or salad, It will taste better, take longer to digest and make you healthy, your mother said so.

Remember most of the oils in those Fat-Free salad dressing are polyunsaturated vegetable oils, which are hydrogenated oils.

The process of Hydrogenation was created in 1907 by E.C. Kayser for Procter and Gamble to manufacture a man made cooking Fat called Crisco to replace the natural occurring fat from meat called Lard.

During the French Revolution, with a desire to reduce the cost of war, Napoleon help create a similar process to create a replacement for Butter.  The replacement was called Margarine.

French Revelation

Hydrogenation Creates Free-Radicals

The process added a hydrogen atom to the fatty acid chain which created a Polyunsaturated fat or Trans fat.  We now know that partially hydrogenated oils are bad for us.  Polyunsaturated fats readily oxidize when exposed to heat, light, or oxygen. They spontaneously oxidize and become destructive free-radicals.  Once free radicals are formed, they attack other cells of the body by taking an electron and creating more free radicals.

The damage done by free-radicals have been proved to cause inflammation which if untreated will cause aging, cancer, mental dementia, Alzheimer’s and other destructive disease let alone Heart Failure. Saturated Fats, like Lard, butter and coconut oil are very resistive to oxidation.

In other words, if nothing else is clear DO NOT EAT FAT FREE FOOD!!

It is not good for you.

Vinegar as Dressing

Vinegar is made from any carbohydrate that has enough sugar to be fermented, including apples, beets, coconut, dates, grapes, and potatoes.  Vinegar is then made from all colors of wine. Vinegar is also made from grain and malt. Vinegars can also be synthetically created in the lab and contains only acidic acid without any natural acids or enzymes. Most Distilled vinegar is created this way.

Cold Olive Oil

Peanut Oil

Sesame Oil

Apple Cider Vinegar

Balsamic Vinegar

Blue Cheese hunks (Just the Cheese)

Pine Nuts

Distilled Vinegar

Yogurt (Goat Milk from the farm)

My Should Clothes Have Toxic Warning Labels?

By Joan McDaniel                   September 11, 2019

This is Part 3 of 3 of my articles on Clothes.  I began to feel the difference , once I started to remove toxins around me including my clothes, I soon felt like I feel at home in my own body again, like when I was a kid.  My body became free of inflammation and irritation and I could breath again.  I didn’t know then what I know now — that all my internal toxins that have been stored away in my own fat cells would also have to be released.  It was like breaking an invisible shield that my body had built up over the many years of toxic living.

It has been almost 7 years since I wrote this, and I am still detoxing  Once my body started getting nutrition and oxygen again, it began to detox on its own.  It all started by removing the toxins around me.  If you don’t understand what I mean about getting oxygen, see my article are you Fermenting? Now on with my old article:

Should clothes have toxic warning labels?

By Joan McDaniel               October 10, 2013

Are the clothes you wear toxic?

This is the final article concerning clothes.  The first covered the toxins in Laundry Detergents, the second covered the toxins found in new clothes and this one covers the material clothes are made of.  Clothes made from material that is either man-made (synthetic) vs. material that comes from nature.  Guess which is toxic?

To give you a hint – I change my polyester “hoody” for a sweater made from cashmere guess which one is non-toxic and warmer?  The Cashmere sweater came from a garage sale for $5.00.  If it didn’t make me so warm, I would never take it off.

Clothes make our image

Ever hear the old saying “Clothes make the man”?

Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.

Mark Twain

Hippie Clothes for Men

Without quoting the bible and its story of the Eve and the Tree of knowledge we know that ever since Adan and Eve, we have worn clothing to cover ourselves once we got kicked out of paradise.

Clothing and the fabric it is made of play a huge role in our life.  We want to look in fashion, in charge, cool and behind the game or in charge or in some cases not in charge. Clothes make our image to ourselves and others.  We also need clothing to protect ourselves from the elements and the world around us.  Clothes protect us from the sun, cold, weather and keep us warm.  From the time the caveman first began wearing fur, the world of clothing and the fabric from which it is made has changed.  Over the ages, a large selection of materials has been created and used.

Are your clothes made of plastic?

As time has passed what started in places like California, people through out America are now busy banning plastic grocery bags, and plastic straws but what about the clothes on their back? Are they made of the same plastic?

Our bodies and Plastic

In this day and age, we use plastic for just about everything.  In our fast paced life, plastics are considered convenient, cost-effective, and useful.  I am not against plastic and I would find it very difficult to live without it.  The plastic marketplace is a large money-maker and well established.  But sometimes, I feel our lives seem based on the artificial and ignoring the real or natural – or at least mine use to.

Plastic may be convenient but this short-term way of thinking can be very misleading and unhealthy.  We have developed a sort of use it and throw it away mind-set, but not everything is temporary.  As much as we try or wish it, our bodies are not made of plastic.  Our bodies cannot be treated with the same temporary mind-set. Has this irresponsible throw away thinking gotten us to where we are throwing away our health too?  Our bodies cannot exist on plastic or digest plastic nutrition.  Our bodies need the real stuff, real natural food to stay well and to fight off toxins that threaten our health.  Short term gains seem to now be causing long-term headaches and other body ailments.

Plastic is made from petroleum which powers the combustion engine when exposed to fire.  We like to think of the cells in our bodies as engines but we don’t go very far on a tank of regular or ethanol gas.  Even though ethanol is made from corn it has zero nutrition. Plastic contains zero – count them – zero nutrients. When our immune system is exposed to plastic, it disrupts the body’s natural hormones.  It also causes free radicals, oxidation, and then inflammation which cause illness like cancer, dementia, diabetes, GI and colon problems, and all other diseases. It in time will overwhelm the body’s immune system and in some cases cause it to attack itself (Autoimmune disease).

The only real way to prevent toxins from collecting in your body in the first place is to avoid exposure to them.

A Brief History of Plastic Clothing

At first, all clothing came from the cell walls of green plants called Celluloid. In 1863 Plastic were made from celluloid.  The cellulose content of cotton fiber is 90%, that of wood is 40–50% and that of dried hemp is approximately 45%. Cellulose is mainly used to produce paper and paper board. Today conversion of cellulose from energy crops into biofuels such as cellulosic ethanol is being mixed and used as gasoline. Cellulose for industrial use is mainly obtained from wood pulp and cotton.

Plastics gave us the Nylon Stocking

Nylon advert, 1950

Celluloid wasn’t perfect for it is flammable, cracks easily, turns yellow, and deteriorates easily if expose to moisture. Perfect plastics are now derived from petrochemicals or petroleum (oil).  Granted Oil is a natural product the resulting plastic is manufactured or created by man. In 1938 Otto Bayer and co-workers discovered and patented the chemistry of polyurethane and plastic was made practical.  Otto was a German industrial chemist at IG Farben and is not related to the Bayer Company or Bayer aspirin. In 1939, Otto’s plastic was used to create Nylon and the Nylon stocking came into existence.  It might me said Women were never the same again.  Soon Fashion became a big money-making market and began to dictate almost everything.

Has this irresponsible throw away thinking gotten us to where we are throwing away our health too? Short term gains seem to now be causing long-term headaches and other body ailments.

Clothes- Nature vs. Man-made fibers

Fiber used for clothing is either Man-made (Synthetic) or made from Nature.

A Partial List of Man-Made of Synthetic Materials;

Acrylic, Cellulose, Nylon, Polyester, Rayon and Spandex (or Elastane).

These materials are primarily made from petrochemicals are not biodegradable and are flame resistant.  Thermoplastic is one name used for these materials there are other name but I am just going to CALL THEM ALL PLASTIC

A Partial List of Natural Clothing Materials;

Natural textile of fibers for clothing materials come from animals and plants.

Angoria, Bamboo, Cheese cloth, Cotton, Denim, Down (feathers), Flannel, Hemp, Flax, Fur, Jute, Latex, Leather, Linen, Mohair, Ramie, Silk, Velvet, wood, wood bark, wool and others.

If you don’t believe me search them on the net you will be amazed how many natural fibers there are and most of them are and can be made into textiles and fabrics.

I just thought, I may of come up with a new money-maker.  I can sell my cat’s cat fur, for I sure do have a lot of it around the house.  Instead of calling it duck down, I’ll call the new material CAT DOWN

Picture is from my collection the title is “Cat Down”

Man-Made Clothing Advantages and Disadvantages.

Advantage – Synthetic Material Selling Points Colorfast, Flame Resistant, Mildew Free, No-Iron, Preshrunk, Stain Resistance, and wrinkle free.  I’m surprised they don’t wash themselves.

Disadvantages – There is only one problem – your skin can’t get oxygen when it is enclosed in plastic.  I don’t know about you but, when I wear polyester or plastic, I seemed to sweat a lot. I never seem to really cool down.  I now notice when I wear a natural product like cotton, I may sweat but the clothes absorb it.  My skin feels cleaner, fresher and my muscles feel more relaxed. Perspiration is your body’s way to control temperature and is one of the major ways to detox (remove toxins).  Skin can eliminate more cellular waste through the pores, then the colon and kidney combined. Wearing plastic your body just reabsorbs the toxins because there is no place for them to go.

When your skin is covered in plastic, it can’t breathe is one way of saying it. If you don’t believe me, just think of what would happen if you put that banned plastic bag over your head for a few minutes to find out.

NO DON’T DO THAT BECAUSE YOU CAN’T GET O2.  Look at the warning label.

Other disadvantages from plastic clothes are headaches, inflammation and irritation of nasal passages, stomach upset and skin.  Now I hope we all know what inflammation means – don’t we?

All disease starts with inflammation – remember.

Symptoms are vague and seem to come and go. Many people develop allergies and sensitivities to the environment and in time lose energy and generally stop feeling good. The more exposed to toxins the stronger the body’s reaction to the clothes you are wearing.

Types of Clothing Fabrics

types of material

To list all the types of fabrics there are in the world would fill up pages and pages. But here is a select sample of the common ones, with a few exotic types thrown in.

Partial List of Synthetic Material (Man Made fibers use in Clothes)

Acetate – Is a form of polyester. It is a combination natural and synthetic fiber.  The natural element is from the cellulose of wood.

Acrylic fibers – A synthetic fiber (man-made) also called vinyl acetate or methyl acrylate.  These fibers are by-products from the petroleum and natural gas manufacturing. Dupont Corporation created the first acrylic fibers in 1941 and trademarked them under the name Orion.  The fabric was made to resemble silk it is an artificial silk.  Acrylic fiber is often used for linings in boots and gloves, carpets, furnishing fabrics, sweaters, and tracksuits.  Acrylic also refers to a paint used by artists to paint a picture or used to paint your walls.

Cellulose Triacetate (CTA or TAC) – Is manufactured from cellulose a fabric similar to Rayon.

Nylon – A synthetic fiber or synthetic polymer (a man-made molecule). It is a thermoplastic silky material. Nylon was first produced on February 28, 1935, by Wallace Carothers at DuPont research facility. Nylon is one of the most commonly used polymers. It was first used in a nylon-bristled toothbrush in 1938 and followed by women’s stockings “nylons” (1940).  It was introduced as a fabric at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.  Nylon was intended to be a cheaper replacement for silk and silk products used during World War II.  It replaced silk in military applications such as parachutes and flak vests, as well as types of vehicle tires.

Polyester – is a man-made fabric made from the by-products of petroleum and coal, mixed with air and water. Like nylon, it has low water absorbency and is quite flammable. Polyester has a very wide range of uses.  From clothes, home furnishing, fillers or cushioning (pillows), to industrial uses like to make bottles, rope, liquid crystal displays, film insulation, etc. Cured polyester can be sanded and polished to a high-gloss, durable finish. Polyester clothing has the advantage of high color retention and durability. It is water, wrinkle and wind resistant compared to natural plant-derived fibers.

Rayon – Is a manufactured regenerated cellulose fiber.  It is made from purified cellulose, primarily from wood pulp. Since it is manufactured from wood it is considered a semi-synthetic fiber. Specific types of rayon include lyocell, modal, and, viscose.

Spandex or elastane is a synthetic fiber known for its elasticity. The name “spandex” is an anagram of the word “expands”. It is stronger than its non-synthetic competitor latex but less durable.  It is a polyurethane-polyurea copolymar that was invented in 1959 by chemists C. L. Sandquist and Joseph Shivers at DuPont’s Benger Laboratory in Waynesboro, Virginia. When first introduced, it revolutionized many areas of the clothing industry.

Natural Fabric Material

Advantages of Natural materials,

The natural fibers of wool and dyed flax were used by man as far back at 36,000 BP.  A prehistoric cave in the Republic of Georgia provides the earliest evidence of humans using natural fibers.  As for the advantages of natural fiber material,

If it was good enough for man before the start of whatever date 36,000 BP stands for ,

If it was good enough for the animal that once wore it,

If it came from the earth the natural earth and not the lab, then it must be God’s gift to us.

Then it is good enough for me!!!!!

Animal Fibers

Animal Fibers – Fibre comes from the hair or wool of mammals like; alpaca, cat, dog, goat, horse, rabbit, sheep, and anything else that has hair or fur. Fiber from glands of insects (Silk) and Avian fiber, and Fibers from the feathers of chicken, duck, birds, swans and anything else that has feathers.

Vegetable Fibers – Fibres

Plant Fibers: Vegetable fibers are generally composed mainly of cellulose: examples include cotton, flax, hemp, linen, yucca plant, and

many others.  Cellulose fibers can be used to manufacture paper and cloth. Vegetable fibers also composed of cellulose which is further categorized into the following: Plant fiber including seed hairs like cotton; stem (or bast) fibers, such as flax and hemp; leaf fibers, such as sisal, and husk fiber, such as coconut

Partial List of Natural Fibers use in Clothes

Angora – The downy coat produced from the Angora rabbit.

Bark cloth is a very old fabric type that was traditionally made and used in parts of Africa, Asia and the Pacific. It comes from the bark of particular trees native to these regions, whereby strips soaked and then beaten into sheets. Bark cloth was used as a garment and furnishings textile.

Blends are a general description of fabrics made of two or more fibres. The idea is to incorporate the distinct characteristics of the separate fibres into one textile.

Bamboo – There are bamboo clothes I looked it up.

Cashmere – Goat Hair.

Cheesecloth is a variant of cotton cloth and has a very loose weave. There are several grades of cheesecloth, ranging from extra-fine to open weaves. It’s mostly used in cooking and, as the name implies, cheese making.

Chiffon is a very sheer, light fabric made out of silk, cotton or synthetic fibres. The twist in the fibres gives it a somewhat rough feel, and the mesh-like weave contributes to its see through properties.

Coconut – Coconut fibers.  There are many types of t-shirts etc.

Corduroy is a strong, durable fabric with a surface of rounded cord or rib and the back has a plain or twill weave. It can be made from several textiles including cotton.

Cotton is derived from the fibre of the tropical cotton plant. When the cotton flowers bloom and die, a boll remains which ripens and splits open to reveal a white, fluffy interior with seeds – this is the raw cotton. Cotton is the most widely used fabric and is the basis of over 30 types of textiles. Try to find organic cotton for you best choice.

Denim is a type of cotton fabric woven in such a way that the threads produce that distinctive diagonal ribbing on the underside of the fabric. Traditionally it was dyed blue and the first denim trousers were made in Genoa, Italy. Both the words ‘denim’ and ‘jeans’ are of French origin.

Down Feathers – Used as fillers for pillows, coats and etc. These are the feathers found under the stronger exterior feather.

Feathers – From birds, chickens, ducks and anything else that has feathers.

Georgette is a type of silk fabric, although today synthetic georgettes are also produced. It’s light, crinkly; slightly rough feel is what it’s known for, plus the range of colors it is dyed in.

Hemp is made from the stems of the same plant that makes marijuana, but does not contain any narcotic elements. Hemp has a linen-like texture, has high water tolerance but wrinkles very easily. Hemp is one of the world’s most useful plants.

Horsehair – Clothes and brushes that come from the hair of a horse.

Jute is made from the cellulose-rich fibres of the jute plant which is native to Asia. It is typically used for making mats, burlap and gunny bags.

Linen is derived from the fibres flax plant and is highly valued for its fresh, cool feel especially during hot weather. Some fabrics of cotton or hemp when woven in a linen-like weave are referred to as linen.

Mohair is a type of wool obtained from the fur of the Angora goat. It has a silk-like sheen and luster but is also quite strong and durable.

Natural latex – is natural rubber.

Rayon is a regenerated cellulose fibre which is almost pure cellulose. Other names for rayon are viscose and art silk.

Silk is one of the oldest and most luxurious fabrics known to man. This protein fibre is obtained from the cocoons of the mulberry moth and was first produced in China as far back as 3,000 BC, also from silkworms.

Velvet is a woven, tufted fabric, originally made purely of silk but commonly composed of silk and rayon these days. The short, dense piles of cut threads are evening distributed to give velvet its distinctive feel.

Venise is a type of damask textile but typically with showy, floral patterns.

Wool is the textile fiber obtained from sheep and certain other animals.  There are forms of wool angora is from rabbits, cashmere is from goats, Mohair from goats, quiviut from muskoxen, and other types of wool from camelids.

A Note about Cotton

While I was in the store the other day I saw some sweat pants on sale.  I looked at the label and it said 100% Algodon.  Hmmmmm… What is Algodon? I had to look it up and this is what I found.

Brief history of Cotton

To the Southern United States before the Civil War Cotton got the title of “King”.  To the South “cotton was king” for it was the base of the economy for the south and many will argue for the North also.  Cotton was used by the ancient people in South America as early as 4000 to 3000 BC.  It was also used in India around 2500 BC.  Scientists found bits of cotton balls and cloth in Mexican caves that were at least 7,000 years old. It use spread worldwide and became the main agricultural crop for the early United States. With the invention of the cotton gin and the industrial revolution in England cotton became King to more than just the Southern United States. It became important worldwide

Types of Cotton: Algodon, Egyptian, Pima, Sea Island, and Supima.

Algodon – Spanish word for Cotton.  Originated in Peru is soft spun and comes in various shades but will fade in sunlight.

Egyptian – Grown in the Nile Valley.  It is considered to be the finest luxury cotton available. It is known for its softness and durability, it will actually get softer with use and washing

Pima Cotton – The name Pima pays tribute to a Native American tribe, it is one of Peru’s main exports

Sea Island – Grown on the seacoast of South Carolina around the time of the Civil War. It was destroyed by the boll weevil in the 20th century.  Use of the name is intended to denote similar quality.

Supima – A subset of Pima plants under careful control by Supima organization in the United States,

Tanguis Cotton – One of Peru’s main exports

Types of Cotton Fabric: Three types – knitted, non-woven and woven.

Woven – A loom and shuttle are used to weave the yarn into a piece of fabric. There are three types of weaves: plain, twill and satin.  Differences in the weave create fabrics like Chambray, Denim, gabardine, gingham, herringbone, satin, and twill to name a few.

Knitted Cotton – is used mainly to make T-shirts. The material is soft and stretchable.

Non-Woven Cotton – Chemicals are used to hold the fibers together.  This method is used to create bandages, cotton pads, diapers, and filters

A Word of Warning

Most of the cotton grown now is GMO.  There is a new movement making available “Non-GMO” cotton fabric.  Cotton is also one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world.  With the new growing concern over how our food is grown, consumer awareness may change how cotton and other crops are grown.

A word about Latex rubber clothing

Since plastic gives the impression of a glossy fabric, it is hard to believe but Latex is a natural fabric it is made of rubber.  It is used mostly in protective clothing like gas masks waterproof Mackintosh rain coats, and Wellington boots.  When worn it tends to be skin-tight, producing a “second skin” effect.  There are several magazines dedicated to the use and wearing of it.

Latex worn as clothing was made famous by the TV Series The Avenger

Emma Peel was a fictional  spy played by Diana Rigg in the British 1960s adventure television series The Avengers.

I know I have dated myself but for the kids of today  it was also worn by

Catwoman in Batman Returns—a cat burglar

Rubber latex is now generally replaced by plastics.

Till next time..

My New Clothes – Caution Before Wearing

By Joan McDaniel                   August 30, 2019

This is Part II of my three part research subject on clothes.  This article is a result of my continuing effort to regain my health after being so sick I could hardly walk. Once I did manage to get out of bed,  I didn’t have enough energy or strength to do much but,  I was determined to get well. I did regained my health. It took time covering several years it was piece by piece – bit by bit.  I started by eliminating toxins in me and around me.

Part 1 deals with washed clothes and all the toxic material used to keep them that way.

This article deals with new clothes one of the most toxic items you’ll ever find.

There is nothing more exiting then new clothes it is almost like finding a new you, but I bet you didn’t know just how toxic new clothes can be

New Clothes – Caution Before Wearing

By Joan McDaniel                            September 26, 2013

Removing Toxins from my own home

Once on the road to recovery from my illness by watching what I ate, I began to look closer into other things that made me sick.  I began researching and understanding what is an Environmental Pollutant or toxin and why it makes you sick from exposure over a period of time? With that understood, I began removing toxins from my house and replacing them with material from nature like clay, cotton, glass, clay pottery,  wool, and wood.  I have replaced all my personal care products like soap, shampoo, tooth paste and household cleaning products with natural material surfactant products. I also replaced my cooking pot, pans, skillets etc even the utensils I used to eat.

My research now finds the very clothes I wear, are a source of many toxins. My last article about detergents and washing clothes with natural plant based enzyme detergents over washing with toxic man-made synthetic laundry detergent addressed that worry. With further research;

I now find NEW CLOTHES are even more toxic.

Oh the Joy of buying new clothes

Rack of New Clothes

Did you know what makes brand new clothes look sooooo brand new and cool??? They are so fresh not a wrinkle, the colors are bright. Speaking from the woman’s point of view, it is fun to go shopping especially for new clothes.  Half the fun of Christmas is shopping.

I don’t want to take the thrill out of it, or to burst anyone’s balloon – But once you get home, put those new clothes in the dirty clothes hamper.  Yes, before wearing wash them. Wash them maybe not once but twice maybe even four times. Not only should they be considered dirty they are soaked with a toxin.  Don’t burn them just wash them.

What I have ended up doing is soaking the new clothes over night in cold water rinsing several times then wash at least twice.  The clothes may look worn but breathable and much more comfortable

Remember High School Biology and that smell?

I bet you cannot guess the name of this toxin.  I’ll give you some hints.

This toxin is used to manufacture a wide variety of household goods.

This toxin you may remember from your high school biology class for its smell.  Remember the day you had to dissect a frog or worm and it smelled terrible? As I remember; this episode ruined my interest in Biology and made me “sick as a dog”.

Well, that smell is the smell of Formaldehyde.

To keep the cloth looking good, NEW CLOTHES ONCE MADE ARE COVERED WITH FORMALDEHYDE. I couldn’t find out how the manufactures get the smell out. Or do they? Many people I talked to say the smell from new clothes make them sick.  Hmmmm I guess I haven’t bought any new clothes lately.  I have been too busy throwing things out or giving them away.

Formaldehyde and other chemicals are used – So- Wash those new Clothes First

Once clothes are made and the last stitch is sewn, they are covered in  formaldehyde and soften with ammonia. Even 100% cotton, Hemp, or other natural materials.   When I was a kid I had to iron my father’s white shirts, it was a real chore and had to be perfect, after all the starching and ironing – I think the shirt could stand up by itself.

Formaldehyde is used in textile manufacturing to prevent the colors and dyes from fading and running, the fabric is easier to maintain, resists shrinking and is wrinkle free. NO MORE IRONING!!!!

Even used clothing purchased from  thrift stores and Goodwill may be sprayed with a toxic fireproofing chemical before they are put up for sale.

Read my last article and — Don’t add in new toxins to your clothes. Replace your man-made synthetic toxic detergents with the many detergents made from natural products from the earth. Some folks add baking soda (not baking powder) to help neutralize new clothing chemicals. Remember to avoid the dryer sheets also.

Old sales ad for embalming fluid

Warning: Formaldehyde is used for a lot of other things. It has many uses.

Once you wash those clothes, you will not be done with Formaldehyde.  You have formaldehyde all around you. About all you can do is give it some distance away from direct contact with your skin. Or better yet direct contact with your stomach by ingesting it.  Remember if it is on your skin you are ingesting it.

Formaldehyde isn’t just used in the textile industry it is also used for embalming remember that biology class and the well persevered specimen?  Let alone Grandma’s last viewing. Formaldehyde delays decay and allows post mortem examinations.

Formaldehyde is also used as a building block for bonding agents in manufacturing.  It is used as a bonding agent and glue in the making almost all manufactured items. It is used for items from your car, clothes, house, wood products,  and petroleum products, to name a few. It cannot easily be replaced it is a building block for the making of a broad array of products.

Consumer Products that use Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is used for:  home building supplies, household cleaners, food, shampoos & Lotions,  Automobile manufacture and parts, and is generated from combustion or the burning of materials like a fireplace or a car emission.

Following is a list of a few products there are many more.

Formaldehyde complete negates the activities of bacteria, fungi, yeast and molds and is it has other uses like a disinfectant –  for the skin, used in Shampoos,  body lotions and as a household cleaners and Soaps

Formaldehyde is one of the most powerful adhesive on the market.  It is used to glue fabric, paper, plastics, wood, and anything else that needs to be stuck together.

pressed wood products that use glues that contain formaldehyde, such as particle board, hardwood, plywood paneling, and medium density fiberboard;

adhesives, paints,  varnishes and floor finishes;

household products such as cardboard, paper products, and wallpaper;

household furniture and carpets

Household cleaners and disinfectants

Health and Beauty products

Cosmetics, Shampoos, and soaps

Formaldehyde is released by combustion.

vehicle exhaust from attached garages or from outdoors;

smoke from fireplaces, ovens, gas stoves, tobacco smoke, and wood-burning stoves emit formaldehyde

Many personal cleansing and beauty products contain formaldehyde; think about that before you put them on your skin,  your largest organ.

The Dangers of Using Products Containing Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a toxin; it therefore causes irritation, stress and inflammation which cause Immune system breakdown and diseases. It acts as a free radical and helps reduce the oxygen needed by your body’s cells.  Exposure over a long period of time will overwhelm the body’s ability to fight infection and cause serious chronic illness.

Free Radicals Oxidative Molecular Injury

Short Term Effects:

Most products contain small amounts of the toxin, the immediate effects are minor irritations.

Asthmatic attacks, headaches, irritation to the lungs, nausea, skin irritation, skin rashes, watery, burning eyes, nose and throat.

Long Term Effects:

Exposure over time can cause major illness. Formaldehyde has been classified as a class 3 carcinogen.

Immune System breakdowns or Auto Immune Disorders

Chronic Fatigue

Loss of Energy

Ingestion of Formaldehyde is highly toxic to all animals, regardless of method of intake. Depending on the amount ingested it has been reported to cause death in an adult human.

Most products contain only very small amounts of harmful chemicals. The danger lies in our modern habits of using many of these products, and for a long time. As you surround yourself with more and more formaldehyde-containing products your exposure level increases. Similarly, the longer you expose yourself to these products the more exposure you are getting.

Many Counties, formaldehyde has been banned due to it being highly carcinogenic. It is still used in colder-weather countries.

As I have said before – I am in the process of replacing products that are manmade synthetic and am replacing them with products made from natural material like coconut, olive or other natural surfactant oil.

I have replaced all my soaps, shampoos, and household cleaners.  It is too expensive to replace my carpets, and flooring but I have recently enjoyed the purchase of real cotton sheets.  I am also replacing my clothes with natural materials like cotton, hemp and others.  I am visiting a lot of garage sales, flea-markets, and thrift, Salvation army and Goodwill stores. That topic will be my next article.

As an update, About two years ago, One of the smartest things I did, was remove the wall to wall carpets in my home.  When I pulled them off the floor I found hard wood floors. The wood was great and in great condition.  I give them a coating of coconut oil once a year and they retain their deep color and great looking. Note no wax or varnish just good ol’ Coconut Oil couldn’t find a better finish.

It took a lot of work but I did it all by myself.  See my strength has really returned.  It was wall to wall carpeting including the stairs that had what seemed to be a million staples.  The hard wood  are beautiful and No more hidden toxins.  I vacuumed up all the years and years of dust.  I feel like it is a new house.

Back in 2012 when I was my sickest, I had returned from the hospital after a week stay.  I was too weak to climb those very same stairs.  I had to crawl up and  sit on my rump to go down.  It took a few years but I regained enough strength to do the work.  It took several days but IT GOT DONE!!!

My Are Washed Clothes Toxic?

By Joan McDaniel                     August 26, 2019

These articles document my recovery from being very sick, and regaining my health by what I ate.  I researched and learned by doing.  I discovered the world of homeopathy and other natural theory to recover my health. My next phase of learning how to recover from my weakened condition was to eliminate the toxins around me.  What better place then to look at the clothes you wear and the maintenance of keeping them and you clean.

This society puts a major effort in maintaining cleanliness.  In some cases, the word Clean is more important than being real.  Truth isn’t understood or separated from all the propaganda. Propaganda simply makes you feel like belonging.  It is more important to be accepted as than anything resembling something or someone of honest values.  Yet is what we are using to be accepted as clean,  hazardous to our health?

It is assumed the body will not notice the difference.  Clean has become so important we think the only way to be accepted is to surround  and fill ourselves with toxic chemicals on a daily basis.  We seem to have a major desire to be sterile.  Machines and Artificial Intelligent Robots may need to be sterile but we Human Beings need bacteria to stay alive and healthy.

Yet, to be healthy your body needs bacteria – both good bacteria and bad bacteria.  Chemicals do not co-exist especially with living matter, especially when the concept of clean means bacteria free.  Out bodies need good and bad bacteria to remain alive and healthy. You can be alive but not healthy.

Which brings me to my next article –  It is part 1 of three parts on the subject of clothes.  I looked at washed clothes and all the toxic material used to keep them that way.

Washed clothes may be free from grime but be very toxic.

Your Laundry Detergent may be Hazardous to Your Health

By Joan McDaniel                                August 23, 2013

Before I start this article, I would like to ask;

mud pies

What does everyone have against dirt?  When I was a kid, I made mud pies for me and my friends. What is so dirty about dirt?  We Americans seemed obsessed with getting rid of dirt like we are with bacteria. Science has proven dirt is beneficial to a child’s life, playing in dirt builds a strong immune system.  It’s interesting to know mankind used to get B-12 from ingesting dirt. People throughout history weren’t so dirt-phobic or germ conscious, as they are today.

Most of the products sold in the grocery store are labeled anti-xxxx. We want all dirt gone and all bacteria dead (Germ Theory), and that goes for both good and bad bacteria.  Is our concept of clean made us dependent on toxic chemicals? It also seems to me to be a little unbalanced when the producers of personal and household cleaners seem more concerned about harm to the environment than harm to the human body.

Please note: Without God’s gift of dirt our plants would not grow and without good bacteria, what we eat would turn to garbage and never be digested. So……………….

Before you reach for that laundry detergent you better read a little further.

Big business and  well financed laundry detergent commercials are full of propaganda.  They show pictures of nature’s mountains, streams, and wildflowers’ giving the impression their product makes clothes fresh as pure mountain air. Words like natural aroma, freshness, and spring renewal are printed on the product label. But, in reality you are wrapping yourself in a toxic blanket of chemicals.  Commercial laundry detergents may remove the stains and grime as this old advertisement shows, but leave toxins that cause unwanted problems ranging from cancer, inflammation, neurological damage, skin irritations, and many others.

Clothes cover the whole body and as you sweat, clothes cling to the skin.  As I have documented in “Are Skin Care Products Harmful?”, the skin is very absorbent.  It is a great delivery system for medications such as birth control, nicorderm patch, pain control and many others.  You can absorb more toxins from the skin than you can with food.  Eating food goes threw a digestive system that filters out toxins.

Many experts recommend: if you would not eat it or drink it, you should not be letting it come into contact with your skin. Ditch the commercial laundry detergents and seek out more natural ways to clean your clothes.

If you launder with common supermarket toxic detergents, switch to natural detergents. It will take a few washings to remove the residual toxic detergent ingredients completely.

What are some of these toxic chemicals?

Here are just some of the toxic chemicals.  These chemicals cannot only cause you harm but they can harm environment as well.  These chemicals can build up in your clothes and will penetrate your skin and have been known to cause; internal inflammation leading to major disease, and organ failure due to immune malfunction and hormone disruption.

All Toxins are Not On the Label

There are at least 17 toxins that go unlisted on the label one of these could be 1,4-dioxane, a synthetic petrochemical carcinogen is a chemical byproduct  contaminant of the manufacturing process and is not required to be listed on product labels. This ingredient may also be in shampoos and household cleaning products. 1, 4-dioxane is a surfactant.

Bleach – Sodium Hypochlorite (household bleach) Chemical precursor to chlorine which is extremely toxic.  Bleach has harmful side effects that have been known for decades.  Bleach is a leading cause of poisoning in the home.  It is an irritant to the eyes, nose, skin, and throat. Skin contact can produce caustic irritation or burns.  Mixing it with other chemicals will also cause fumes. Bleach also kills all bacteria good and bad.

Brighteners – Can be toxic to fish and other wildlife let alone cause allergic reactions in humans.

Fragrance – Want your clothes to smell fresh?  Fragrance chemical additives can be very irritating.  They have been known to irritate the eyes, skin and nostrils causing itchy watery eyes, stinging nostrils and red irritated skin.  They can also trigger asthma attacks, aggravate allergies, affect your thinking, concentration and coordination.  These chemicals have also been linked to toxic effect on fish and mammals.

Phenols – National Health Institute has deemed Phenol as toxic.  It can cause damage to body organs like heart, kidney, liver, and lungs.  It is very easily absorbed into the skin.  Phenols are linked to serious health conditions even death.

Phosphates – Used to prevent dirt from settling back on clothes after being washed.  Can stimulate growth of marine plants and trigger unbalanced ecosystems.

Surfactants – A substance which basically binds to oily particles and carries them away with the water during washing.  These are what make our clothes clean when we wash them.  Surfactants can be natural or synthetic.  Natural surfactants are generally safe but chemical or synthetic surfactants are not. Commercial laundry detergents are loaded with synthetic surfactants such as 1,4-dioxane, Linear Alky Benzene Sulfonate (LAS), nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPE), Petroleum distillates (aka napthas derived from crude oil), and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).

I find this extremely interesting for most detergents have a Warning label.  Harmful is swallowed or comes in contact with the skin. Hmmmmmmm I wear my clothes on my skin and I have found it takes more than one rinse cycle to rid the clothes of the detergent. Have you ever taken a fresh washed towel and soaked it in water only to watch the water bubble.  That is left over soap. Good thing for big business and the team of lawyers that represent it.

Any one of these above listed chemical additives can be harmful on its own, but they are combined in most commercial laundry detergents products and can react with each other becoming even more dangerous justifying the above label.

And now we come to Fabric Softener and Dryer Sheets

If you thought the advertisements for Laundry detergent are propaganda what about the Ads for Dryer Sheets?

Snuggle Frabric Softener Advertisment

Fabric softener and Dryer sheet products are available using such names as; Bounce, Cling Free, Downy, Ultra Downy, Essentials, Final touch, Fresh’n Soft, Purex, Snuggle and others. They may make your clothes feel soft and smell fresh, bit these softeners have some of the most toxic products used in laundering products.

Here is a list of contaminants;

A-Terpineol – Can cause respiratory and nervous system problems.

Benzyl acetate – Linked to pancreatic cancer.

Ethyl Acetate – A narcotic on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list.

Camphor – May causes potential central nervous system disorders.

Chloroform — Neurotoxin, anesthetic and carcinogenic

Limonene – Known carcinogen

Pentane – A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled

Plus, some fabric softeners and dryer sheets even contain ethanol, an alternative fuel derived from corn, grain, or even agricultural waste. Any wonder it’s on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list?

What to do

new clothes

You could be like the Hans Christian Andersen’s fable

And not wear any clothes or you can stop washing your clothes or

listen to Lee Euler, editor of Cancer Defeated, has some much more realistic tips on how to minimize your risk:

1Wear your clothes longer before laundering them — 2 or 3 times, especially during cooler seasons when they’re barely soiled after one wearing.

2Use 100% non-toxic, biodegradable laundry products.

3Use phosphate-free products.

4Seek out plant-based enzymes and food-based detergents.

5Say no to bleach, dyes, fragrances, optical brighteners, and masking agents.

6Reduce the amount of detergent per load. Remember, the manufacturer’s goal is to sell as much product as possible. You might find your clothes get just as clean with ¼ cup of detergent as with ½ cup. Plus, you’ll save money.

Once you start looking, there a plenty of sources for natural laundry detergents and household cleaners. I searched the internet and found products made from my favorite source Coconut Oil and you can too. Take the time to scrutinize the product contents and more importantly what it is free of.

I have removed all toxins from my house.  I wash everything from the bathroom, kitchen sink to the clothes on my back with natural products.  I even filter out chlorine from my water, but that is another subject entirely.

Also Avoid Dry Cleaning

What can be easier than dropping a pile of sweaty clothes off to the Dry Cleaners.  The returned clothes look sharp.  They are pressed and make you look like a pro.

Dry cleaning is used to clean delicate fabrics and textiles that cannot withstand the rough and tumble of a washing machine and clothes dryer; it can also eliminate labor-intensive hand washing. But dry cleaning is anything that would make one think of clean.  The process uses a toxic chemical process called tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylente) which the industry calls “perc” or “PERC”. This is a non-water-based solvent to remove soil and stains from clothes.

But the process perc is an modern day improvement. The ancient Romans used ammonia (derived from urine) to launder their woolen togas. Dry cleaning was first discovered by a French dye-works owner Jean Baptiste Jolly in the mid 19th century. This process used petroleum-based solvents such as gasoline and kerosene. Jean noticed that his tablecloth became cleaner after his maid spilled kerosene on it. He subsequently developed a service cleaning people’s clothes in this manner, which became known as “nettoyage à sec”—i.e., dry cleaning.

Shift to tetrachloroethylene

Flammability concerns led William Joseph Stoddard, to develop Stoddard solvent a less flammable solvent and after World War I much less flammable solvent chlorinated was used. In the 1930s, the dry cleaning industry adopted tetrachloroethylene (perc) a stable, nonflammable, and gentle solvent.  It Perc, however, was incidentally the first chemical to be classified as a carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1993.

The dry cleaning industry is in the process of replacing perc with other chemicals and/or methods. If you must dry clean certain clothes, look for an eco-friendly ‘green’ dry cleaner in your area. But remember it is still using chemicals which may be good for the environment but not so great for your health.

Silicone-based solvent

Some Cleaners are using a green dry cleaning process which uses a silicone-based solvent and has been around since the late 1990s. The substance is comparable to deodorant, but has a very different job! GreenEarth Cleaning is designed to use detergents and the dry cleaning process to remove stains and soil from fabric, but does so without actually “touching” the fibres.

Following is documentation on the Solviar Cleaning System using the GreenEarth Cleaning system.  In my opinion it still contains chemicals, which may be safe for the environment but not very good for the skin.  If you can’t eat it, then don’t wear it. But I will let the Company speak for itself. This is from their web-site:

The Solvair Cleaning System, along with being safe for our environment, is a completely heat less process, making it safe for your delicate garments. Parkers were the first dry cleaner in Canada to adopt this technology and we have been amazed by the results we achieve through this process. Solvair uses a biodegradable cleaning liquid to remove dirt and stains and then dries by floating garments in cool liquid C02. This removes the potential for tumbling damage and protects delicate details like buttons and beadwork.

My Health and the Big Propaganda Money train

By Joan McDaniel                    August 14, 2019

Almost seven years ago, this article was written. My research and learning had come a long way.  My health improved and I felt well managed enough to return to work. I still had a long way to go to regain my strength and repair my colon but I was feeling much stronger and thought I could return to work, part time three days a week. Thanks goodness, because I was running out of money.

I wrote this article to try to explain to my co-workers what I had found out about food.  At this time I had learned a great deal but, I had a long way to go and much more to learn.  This article again reflects facts as I knew them and how I got started.  It states the basic principles I used in making food selections.  The article is very similar to one written my the Health Ranger at Natural News who is also being censored.  I added my own thoughts and experience.

At that time, I used the term Propaganda.  It wasn’t until recently, I would have a deeper understanding of  propaganda and censorship and how committed the other side could be. From what I thought was a small problem is now a major campaign against truth.

I don’t know why they are so afraid of us.  Maybe it is because Truth travels and is easy to proof and I guess more than one person was beginning to understand how to stop the Big Propaganda Money Train — So they had to stop us — Now on with my old article. I guess, I never really understood how afraid the propagandist are of Truth and Common Sense.  Now on with my old article.

Seven Toxic foods, drinks, and additives to cut out from your diet for good

By Joan McDaniel                                                  August 14, 2012

Propaganda Techniques

Propaganda Techniques

My health is better now and I have returned to work doing 3 days a week as part time.  Everyone was glad to see me and I explained to them about my recovery and its documentation on this web site.  The site has been well accepted with many hits per day.  At work when we had time to talk I talked to my co-workers  about food and nutrition.  As we were talking one day, an employee had one of those energy drinks with her.  I advised her not to drink that.  She looked puzzled and said, “It’s the safe one –  it is Diet.”

I attempted an explanation to them the dangers of sugar free but then I later read an article from Natural News and their list of seven toxic things to avoid and one of them was sugar substitutes.

“With so much conflicting information out there about which foods are healthy and which foods are not, it can be difficult for many people to determine how best to approach a healthy lifestyle that includes eating well. But a good place to start is to avoid these seven toxic foods, beverages, and additives that are quite common in the Standard American diet (SAD).

Diet sodas and beverages sweetened with artificial chemicals. One of the more common dietary misconceptions in mainstream society today is the idea that “diet” beverages are somehow healthier than their sugar-sweetened beverages (32g in some cases). These popular artificial sweeteners are used in diet sodas, juices, chewing gums, and other foods.

Not only are artificial sweeteners bad for your health, but they also tend to promote obesity ( If you want to protect yourself against chronic illness and toxicity — aspartame literally converts to formaldehyde in the body and causes metabolic acidosis (acid pH)— it is best to stick with either raw sugars or natural sugar substitutes like pure stevia extract or just plain water.”

I found a website that lists over 92 different aspartame-related symptoms compiled by the FDA from 10,000 consumer complaints.

Aspartame – It puts the DIE in Diet Soda + 6,000 other products

FDA Approved Artificial sweeteners

Aspartame  (NutraSweet and Equal) which is 200 times sweeter than sugar. Discovered in 1965 approved by FDA 1980.

Saccharin (Sweet’N Low, Sweet Twin, and Necta Sweet,) which is 200 to 700 times sweeter than sugar. Discovered 1879 was the first artificial sweetener.

Sucralose (splenda,) which is 600 times sweeter than sugar.

Acesulfame-K (Sunett and Sweet One,) which is 200 times sweeter than sugar.

Neotame, which is 7,000 to 13,000 times sweeter than sugar.

Saccharin was the first discovered in 1879.

These FDA approvals are based  on a majority of test performed by at least 70 to 80% by the manufacture themselves. Studies of a few courageous independent scientist and former FDA, CDC and other toxicologist, have been ignored or pushed into the lower desk drawer.

The ingredients of VitaminWater 10 (owned by Coca Cola) contains the natural sweetener Stevia

Plus crystalline fructose, sucrose , and  a mysterious product called Erythritol. Erythritol has been approved by the FDA and  is a sugar alcohol which is a part of Stevia but not the whole natural plant.  Erythritol does provide fewer calories than sugar but is an unknown ingredient when used without the rest of the natural plant.  It has been claimed by Dr. Mercola and others that it can lead to abdominal gas and diarrhea.

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), the silent killer. It is not really much of a secret

anymore that HFCS, despite all the corn industry shilling, is a toxic sweetener that should be avoided ( Since it is linked to obesity, brain damage, low IQ, and even mercury poisoning, avoiding all foods that contain HFCS — this can include breads, cereals, and other seemingly innocuous foods — will do wonders for your health.

You would be better off using the Stevia Sweetener which is made from the whole plant

Also note the product

Truvia is the mysterious product called Erythritol not the whole leaf.

Most vegetable oils, including hydrogenated and ‘trans’ fat varieties including Canola Oil

The misdirected war on saturated fats has convinced millions of people that unsaturated vegetable oils are a healthy alternative. Not only do many vegetables oils turn rancid quickly, which means they are toxic (, but many of them also contain high levels of omega-6 fatty acids which, apart from omega-3 fatty acids, can cause severe health problems like heart disease and cancer. (

Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs) Many vegetable oils are also derived from genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), including canola, soy, and corn oils. These same oils are often hydrogenated as well, a process that turns them into heart-destroying solid oils. Avoiding these and sticking instead to healthy fats like grass-fed butter, coconut oil, olive oil, and hemp oil will greatly improve your health and lower your risk of disease.

White bread, pasta, and other refined flour foods. They are cheap, plentiful, and

come in hundreds of varieties. But white breads, pastas, and other foods made from refined flour are among the top health destroyers in America today. Not only are most white flour products carcinogenic because they are bleached and bromated, but they also lack vital nutrients that are stripped away during processing. Avoid them, and all processed wheat products if possible, to optimize your health.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG), carrageenan. Often hidden in foods under deceptive names (, MSG is a pervasive salt chemical you will want to avoid that is linked to causing headaches, heart problems, brain damage, and other problems. Carrageenan, another chemical additive often hidden in “natural” and organic foods like nut milks and lunch meats, is similarly worth avoiding, as it can cause gastrointestinal upset and colon cancer. (

Processed Salt. Referred on the nutrition labell as Sodium.  Many processed food add major amounts of sodium to their products but processed salt lacks the trace minerals normally present in sea and earth salts, which means it ends up robbing your body of these vital nutrients. These trace nutrient are necessary for the body to fight off disease. ( Diseases like Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, hypothyroid and stroke due to lack of Iodine and other trace minerals are just a few of the many conditions that can result from refined salt intake, so your best bet is to stick with unrefined sea salts and other full-spectrum salts. I have recommended Himalayan Sea Salt as a replacement.
